The Dartmouth football team is not as bad as its early season record indicates. I am writing these notes after having been to the Columbia game which was lost in the last minute of a real old-fashioned thriller, 25-19. I walked from the field with John Del Isola, the Dartmouth line coach. "The kids played a good ball game," he said. "They deserved to win. That last pass ... just missed ... well, the Columbia boy was hot as a pistol with that football."

John's remarks just about summed up the game. Our team put on a heart-warming performance, one that had me rooting for a Dartmouth football team as I hadn't done since the Cornell game of 1941. The last pass that he mentioned came With Dartmouth on the Lions' six-yard line with 25 seconds to play. The sophomore quarterback for Dartmouth threw a bullet-like pass toward the end zone but unfortunately Columbia grabbed it to end the game. But the club is beginning to look like a team that can score and that's the kind of a team that keeps you coming back for more.

The crowd was pretty small because of the November snowstorm and winter weather. Following on the heels of the terrific 32-0 win over Yale, I thought the place would be crowded. The '41ers on hand were few and far between, but I did run into Don Blount and Snufly Smith. There were a few members of other classes who might have looked pretty good on the field, including Bill Hutchinson '40, Bob MacLeod '39 and Mutt Ray '37. While we're still on the subject of athletics -how about that Art Hills! Know what he did? Won the Twin State Tennis Tournament Doubles Championship in Hanover last September. Now living in Winchester, Mass., Art teamed with Bob Joslin of Watertown Mass to win the title, 16-14, 2-6, 12-10. A real iron man - and at our age.

The directory of Dartmouth Alumni Officers which I have recently received from the College shows '4l making a fine showing in local alumni clubs. Rich Fisher is president of the Hartford Club; Bill English, president of the Naugatuck Valley (Conn.) Club; DowneyGray, secretary of the Louisville (Ky.) Club; Hank Frechette, president of the Nashoba (Mass.) Club; Bruce Muir , secretary of the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Club; Al Gordon, president of the Omaha Club; Ray Welboum, secretary of the Laconia (N. H.) Club; DonHanks, president of the Club at Glens Falls, N.Y.; and Harry Broh, secretary of the Charleston (W. Va.) Club.

Ray Welbourn wrote me a note from up New Hampshire way and mentioned having seen Bill Clark and Don Hanks at the Colgate game. Says Ray, "By the time those two farmers got done trading notes on their cattle herds, chickens, and potatoes, my 100 apple trees looked like a model train alongside the 20th Century. Hanks has fifty head of cattle and about 5000 chickens. Let's organize a barbecue." Ray and his wife have recently added No. 2 to their family, this time a girl, Martha Lynne. His son David is 5.

A wedding to report: Chuck Weisker has taken the fatal step. He married Miss Margaret Ryan of Richmond, Vt. Rev. RichardKnight, assistant dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Boston, has accepted the position of rector of Grace Church in Amherst, Mass. He and his wife have four children and will live in the rectory on Boltwood Ave. in Amherst.

This is the month when all the Alumni Fund contributors are listed and your secretary's work is therefore shortened. Take care, have a Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and if you haven't played "Scrabble" yet give yourself a set for Christmas and learn to fight with your neighbours.
