Most of the mail came right around the holidays, beginning with a nice note from Ike Weed, explaining that he is not up to date on the Hanover scene as a result of having two TWA senior citizen passes. He and Hazel have been traveling all over the place. Ike adds: "We saw Lucille and Gary Allen last summer. They were about to take off for Alaska. It was good to see Mary and Al Gutman at the opening of the Hood Museum in September. It's the first time I've seen Al since 1940. I'll keep my ear to the granite and will write again should anything newsworthy happen in the Moose Mountain area." Thanks, Ike.

Bob Weil writes from his desk at Weil Brothers Cotton in Montgomery, Ala., to say that all goes well and that he is on for the 50th. None too soon to make plans for that golden event, warns Bob. Next a brief note from Dick Funkhouser, who will be at his house in Ocean Reef, Fla., after spending Christmas with his dad.

Good to hear from Steve Robinson out Los Angeles way. Steve hasn't been back to Hanover since graduation, but he promises to give our 50th a good shot. He is still practicing law in L.A., but his wife has retired from teaching and is pushing for the 50th.

On a more somber note, I am sorry to have to report the deaths of three classmates: Frederick Brecht Jr. (January 1985), Robert C. Common Jr. (August 1985), and John S. Cooper (November 1985). Obits will appear in this or a later issue.

A Christmas card from Ann and BobBerger reports tennis games with SamWilliams. Sam and Lorraine were in Vero for the holidays. Also included was a newsletter from the Dartmouth Club of the Treasure Coast announcing the presence of the Dartmouth Aires there in March.

After 43 years in production and operations management divided between the U.S. Steel and Reynolds Metals, Lam Kerins has retired to Williamsburg, Va. "We bought a good-size house with a pool, and any '40s passing through the area are invited." Ursula and Lam did a lot of touring this past summer, she abroad and he here. Lam is busy with a variety of hobbies and is thinking about writing a book on management by one who has been there.

Stet Whitcher passes on news from GarAshley, who reports a very heavy teaching load at Franklin College along with the news that he had six students with him on a trip to Paris and Switzerland in January. Another Christmas card brings news from Alice and Jack Fitzgerald. Jack sees John F. McDonald from time to time and has (at the time of writing) just finished his Boston Latin '35 reunion. ChetBerry and Bob Levine were in that class but missed the reunion. Jack is currently president of the Military Historical Society of Massachusetts, which may be hosting Charles and Di in September 1986. He and Alice report good health and five granddaughters. Then, in came a College bulletin about the Minary Conference Center on Squam Lake in Holderness, N.H. This looks to be a superb gathering spot for 10 to 30 people with a service staff. The College would like to have you consider using it for conferences or ski weekends. Looks good.

Pete Basquin chimed in with December news, including a new address: 4 Hornblower Drive, Waretown, NJ 08758. They are on the inland waterway, so you boaters going down or coming up should take advantage! Pete's grandniece, Judith Cassell, has been accepted for early admission to the class of 1990. Pete plans to be with her at her graduation and our 50th! Pete also reports learning to run a computer and building a harpsichord for his son. This we have to see!

Another Christmas message-this one from Bob Graham on the Hanover scene. It included a photo of two fabulous '40s atop Moosilauke. Bill Duncan and Bob did the Gorge Brook Trail in two hours, 20 minutes. Bob continues to lead freshman trips up that way and loves it.

At my request, John Manley sent in an explanation of the John Manley Award that is given out at the end of the football season. John says: "This past year I got involved with the weight room in the Alumni Gym. They purchased Nautilus units with funds I provided. I also set up an annual award to be given to the football player who became a better player through the use of that equipment. It consists of a name on a large plaque with words of commendation." Thanks, John, both for the news and the very meaningful gift.

A super letter came from Mac Cross. He is planning to see us all at the 50th if not before. Mac has been retired since '79. He and Marilyn (Colby '39) head for Europe in April. The full story will come out next month, and remember you read it here first!
