To Dartmouth alumni and friends everywhere:
This year, through the remarkable commitment of thousands of alumni and friends and the devoted labor of many volunteers, this superb college of ours has once again made fundraising history. An unprecedented $47.3 million—$7 million more than last year—was given to support the work of educating America's most talented young men and women for life and leadership.
This is a good time to be at Dartmouth. It is always deeply satisfying to dedicate one's energies to an institution with a noble mission— but just now there is a specially heightened sense of optimism about the future of our well-beloved college, part of the anticipatory excitement that accompanies a change in leadership.
Soon a new vision will be articulated for Dartmouth. President Freedman will have the difficult but rewarding task of integrating the best of Dartmouth's past achievements with the richest of the possibilities for the future. We look forward to the work of realizing that vision, confident that we will always be able to count on the generous support of the entire Dartmouth community.
A society can be measured by the strength of its commitment to education, and higher education is a culture's final formal offering to its young people. We who shepherd the next generation through Dartmouth have taken on a demanding responsibility—that of passing on to students the skills not only for scholarly and material success but also for a sense of fulfillment and joy in the living of their lives. Once again, the generous Dartmouth family has stepped forward to share that responsibility. Thank you all—again and always. It could not be done without you.
Sincerely,
Vice President for Developmentand Alumni Affairs
YEAR-END GIVING & TAXES 1987 is a transition year under the Tax Reform Act of 1986. Rates will be lowered again in 1988, and for most donors a charitable gift in 1987 will generate a greater tax saving than the same gift made in 1988. For more information about tax consequences of charitable giving, contact the Dartmouth Bequests & Trusts Office in Blunt Alumni Center, Hanover, New Hampshire 03755 (603/646-2150).
