After commencement there was a great deal, of speculation about President McLaughlin's future.

At the end of August, this was laid to rest by the announcement from Aspen, Colo., of his election as chairman of the Aspen Institute for Humanistic Studies. He will succeed Robert O. Anderson, former chairman of Atlantic Richfield Cos., who has held this post for 27 years.

In accepting his election as chairman,' Mr. McLaughlin said, "The Aspen Institute's achievement has been to reinforce the humanistic values of our society by bringing together, on a frequent and open basis, leaders from all areas of the public and private sectors for the discussion of contemporary issues. These exchanges between individuals having varied backgrounds and with diverse responsibilities, as well as coming from different nations around the globe, have fostered cooperative initiatives to advance, on a worldwide basis, a society that respects the well-being and freedom of the individual.

"Never before has the United States, at home and abroad, needed so desperately to find the answers to so many difficult questions, and the Aspen Institute approach to the discovery of workable answers is essential. I shall consider it a privilege to be part of this important enterprise and effort."

The Aspen Institute conducts programs at its headquarters located at the Wye Plantation, near Easton, Md., as well as summer-season activities in Aspen, Colo. McLaughlin will maintain offices at Wye and Washington, D.C.
