And then there was August. No, not The Guns of August, but the funs of August. Hanover get-togethers and phone calls and the "My goodness, how are yous ..."

Jack and Barbara Snobble called from Carbondale, Colo., to tell of their late summer travel plans. Barbara was off for China on one of the organized Dartmouth trips, while Jack, who has been hobbled by hip and back ailments, was off on a five-week packtrip into Wyoming. "He can't walk the Great Wall of China," said Barbara, "but he can still ride a mule."

Rog and Shirley Feldman, who divide their time between Martha's Vineyard and Florida, were around and about, bringing a granddaughter to summer camp in Fairlee and "walking and soaking up the campus." The Feldmans cruised the Virgin Islands last winter on a small sailboat.

Bill Foye has stepped down from deaning at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, but he's still teaching and researching there and is now the occupant of a prestigious teaching chair. His textbook, Principles of Medicinal Chemistry, is used in universities around the world, and Bill has been seeing some of the world himself. Recent travels have taken him to Egypt, India, Thailand, Japan, England, and Scotland. And, Bill may just be one of the younger fathers in the class: he married II years ago, and he and Lila have a son, Owen, who is 10.

Ship ahoy: Morse codes informed us that Maryanne and Don Pfeifle, Bill and JoanBarrett, and Bill and Liz Craig cruised the Maine coast for a week on the Pfeifles' newly acquired boat.

John Eaton, the commodore of Character Yachts in Mamaroneck, N.Y., has decided that landlubbering may have an edge over seagoing, and so he's looking into some projects that are a good deal closer to shore.

Recent widower Bob Eshbaugh came through Hanover for his first visit in 45 years and we did a little wining and dining to celebrate that event. Bob is dividing his time between Florida and North Carolina these days, with his three kids and grandchildren within shouting distance. And recent widow Jean Allen (the late "Needle's" wife) was in town looking for a house so that she can move here from North Carolina. We raised a glass to that proposition, too, along with the Swampy Marshes and the Pinky Corroons.

Also back in Hanover for the first time in a while was Dick Morgan, twin brother of local stalwart Rod Morgan. Dick is into retirement and enjoying the same in Buffalo.

Bob "Twitch" Miller informed us that he will be retiring in December, thus ending a life-long career with a baking equipment company in Cincinnati.

A constant reminder: our 45th reunion is next spring, June 13, 14, 15, 1988.

The constant reaper: George Dyke died September 1 of lung cancer and Dick Sweet on the 14th of a heart attack. Our sympathies.

That's it. Blessings.
