Pete Herman is now responsible for the 1958 class project of bringing '58s with special expertise and experience to Hanover for one to two weeks of interaction with students and faculty. He needs your recommendations from all fields of interest medicine, science, literature, politics, to identify a few. Ideas, nominations, and volunteers go to Pete Herman, Box 30, West Topsham, VT 05086.
Our new class agent is John Whiteley of York, Pa. John served as eastern regional coordinator under Sam Smith, past head agent, who continued a family tradition of generations of service to the College. DaveBadger, western regional coordinator, Frank Sands, participation coordinator, Phil Stoddard, physicians, and Otto Wagenbach, matching gifts, served with MelAlperin, Bob Downey, Joel Portugal, WaltVail, and Pete Williamson, special gifts, with zeal and dedication. All of their hats are tipped to the class agents who make Dartmouth's campaign unsurpassed.
The selection of Walter W. Vail as Class President of the Year, honored for dedicated service to the class and the College, validates the opinion of everyone who served with Walter. Walter's unfailing good humor and kindly smile masks steely resolution. He is a master motivator and conciliator. He has developed the ability to define objectives, delegate responsibility, and follow up constructively. The honoring of Walter Vail has everything to do with unselfish service to high ideals and a great institution.
The future belongs to those who identify it. Andrew Thomas of DATA Group Corporation, Burlington, Mass., recognized the opportunity to combine the existing business of field service with modern computer techniques. Service is the fastest growing segment of our economy. Field service keeps systems functioning after they are installed. Andy's book, Manager's Guide to Automated Service Systems, describes profit opportunities in field service and fundamental elements of the successful computerized system, and provides a return-on-investment analysis which sells this program to management. Andy has an M.B.A. from Babson and is adjunct professor of international business at Nichols College.
John Sherwood works in a specialized field of real estate development. A property owner or developer can obtain from John an analysis of the best available uses for a particular parcel and the steps required bojective.
Andy Petersen, formerly our class forester, now operates a Hanover-area consulting firm that assists businesses to set up new computer systems and also improve the efficiency of existing computer installations.
Talk about excuses. Jack Stomberg was announced as the featured speaker on a reunion panel. Bechtel Corporation needed his negotiating skills elsewhere and intervened. Jack sent his regrets from Ankara, Turkey.
Tony Gittes is back in the U.S.A. after a long stint in South America. If you need an expert in doing business in South America, Tony is your man. Fred Hart was observed performing in the reunion band. Joe Jacquet was off to Seattle, Wash., to set up a purchasing operation for Digital Equipment. Although Phalen Hurewitz has a distinguished gray beard, he showed youthful vigor on the dance floor. Our man in Mexico City is Vince Hovanec, foreign service officer in charge of all public relations and communications at the U.S. embassy in Mexico City. As Leon Goodrich smiled on the sidelines, his two handsome sons drew a crowd of females at reunion. Finally, the class was helped in a million ways at reunion by Sally Prescott, both on behalf of the College and as a friend to all.
