Feeling that the traditional freshman trip with its emphasis on rural pleasures wasn't attractive to some students, the freshman office this fall instituted an urban freshman trip. The Reverend Gwen King, the College's Christian chaplain, was a co-leader of one of four groups that left Hanover to explore Boston. Freshmen who thought the trip would be cushier than a trek through the New Hampshire wilds learned quickly that "walking 30 miles on concrete is not easy," King reports.
As on more traditional freshman trips, the Hub trekkers packed sleeping bags and food, sang, and learned the joys of feeding nocturnal mosquitoes along a route that had a pronounced historical theme. The hikers followed the Freedom Trail, spent a night in marine barracks at the site of the U.S.Constitution, camped a second night at the Lexington Battlefield, and on the last day hiked the path taken by the Minutemen to Concord. For the final leg of the trip, the group boarded a bus for Moosilauke.
