Our newspapers played up the super-drama of it with photos, quotes, and headlines. I'll bet the rescue of a humpback whale by [Charlie Mayo's son "Stormy" deserved space in your local paper too. The whale was entangled in a fisherman's net 30 miles east of Boston. Stormy (remember the whale slides he showed at our reunion?) led a rescue crew in an inflatable dinghy. Floating right on top of the whale, Stormy managed to work flippers, mouth, and tail free of the net in three hours. For his daring, skill, and concern, ABC named Stormy Person of the Week the following Friday.
Milt Alpert reports Alumni Fund results. Number of donors: 146. That comes to 97 percent of our goal. The $62,917 you gave or pledged chalked up 94 percent of 1932's goal of $67,000. Let's give Milt and his cohorts an E for excellence and effort, along with our thanks. "A special thanks," wrote Mike Cardozo, "must go to those ladies who enriched the list by keeping alive the names of cherished classmates whom we see no more."
Spring 1990 saw the Ed Markses on the move. They went to Switzerland to visit Ed's daughter, and to Leesburg, Va., to see Tom Marks '65 and five grandsons. In Boulder, Colo., they saw Vera's son who is in engineering school there; and in Ann Arbor, Mich., they attended the graduation of Vera' s younger daughter. Ed is president of the American branch of International Social Service, "which assists migrants with special problems through inter-country case work." A biennial meeting of ISS branch presidents took Ed and Vera to Hong Kong. "There, new construction abounds," reported Ed, "with scarcely a hint that China will take over in 1997." In fact, the visitor will see rooftop signs: "Better Death Than Return" and "No Tienanmen Square II."
