A few miles up the Hudson River from West Point stands a centuries-old fieldstone dwelling known as the Gomez/Mill House. As an ancient "residence of the earliest Jewish settlers in the New World," it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since it was once the home of an ancestor of Mike Cardozo, it is fitting that Mike, a direct descendant, should be president of the Gomez Foundation for Mill House.
In a quest for early eighteenth century furniture to go in the Gomez/Mill museum, Mike sought the help of Harold Sack, head of Israel Sack, Inc. in New York. Mike quotes the antiques expert who wrote the Foreword for Harold's autobiographical American Treasure Hunt (1986): "Harold Sack, the summum bonum among scholars of antique American furniture, and the senior statesman of dealers, transcends all others today in the pantheon of American antiquarians." Mike adds, "Maybe other '32s are the summum bonum of their professions (Carl McGowan comes to my mind) but not many. I am always impressed to discover just how eminent some of us are."
Memory Lane Department. Can you fill in the blank in this quote from our Aegis? " had never done any track work until he came to Dartmouth, and in his senior year ... he is one of the best all-around athletes Dartmouth has had in years." No bells ringing? Here's a hint: at the Eastern Olympic Tryouts in Cambridge, Mass., June 11, 1932, he set a new Dartmouth record with a javelin throw of 203' 53/4".
You're so right. Fill the blank with MaiMetcalf. In a note from Marv Chandler I learned Marv has been speculating whether Mai's record still holds, and if so "is there any other College track or field record half as old?" Alas, records are made to be broken, and the current record in the javelin throw (unless broken this spring by an undergraduate on our super track team) is an impressive 248' set by Skip Cummins '76. Mai, how do you keep in shape these days? Do any jogging?
Charlotte and I have just returned from Ann Arbor, Mich., where we gave our blessing to our newest and eighth grandchild, Justin Tyler Rowe '12. He is the son of Dr. Frederic Lee Rowe '79. (Presumably Fred is still '79, even though he left Dartmouth after one term, if you can imagine such a thing, and graduated from Macalester in St. Paul.)
