Since its founding in 1894 the University Glee Club of New York has heard many Dartmouth voices in its all-male chorus. At the moment we have more than a hundred singing members—including a half dozen from Dartmouth—and if you can sing on key and read music you're invited to try out. We give a white-tie concert in the winter at Avery Fisher Hall, followed by a dance, and there's a similar event in the spring.
Last spring we also performed in England and Wales. Fifty-five of us, many accompanied by our wives, flew to London in May. We began the tour by holding a joint concert with the Stock Exchange Glee Club, then went on the road, putting on some 15 concerts in such interesting places as the Oxford Library and Salisbury Catherdral.
For years I have had the privilege of leading the group in "Eleazar Wheelock" and enjoyed doing this on the tour. Frequently local singing groups joined us, particularly in Wales, where we would sing together far into the night after the formal program was over.
Among the Dartmouth grads who've retired from active singing are Tom Gillespie '27, Frank Williams '29, John Little '40, Frank Hartmann '43, and Bill Griffiths '49. But you can still hear Robert McQueen '43, Alan Welty '56, Tim Ratner '63, my son James '64, and yours truly.
Incidentally, we don't sell tickets to our concerts but you can get them through a member. If you want to come to listen, or to try out, write me at Suite 1166, 60 East 42nd Street, New York 10165.
