Economist Walter Williams was the first speaker brought to campus By the newly formed Ernest Martin Hopkins Institute. The New York-based organization was formed by a group of alumni who seek to balance what they perceive as bias favoring liberal speakers at Dartmouth. Williams gave two lectures. In the first, he spoke about the negative effects of government efforts to improve the economic plight of minorities. The next day, Williams discussed how South Africa's apartheid system is the result of socialist influences.
According to Gerald Hughes 'BB, the Institute's student consultant, the organization did not seek College co-sponsorship for these lectures but rented a lecture hall instead, as College policy permits.
