ACHIEVEMENTS AND HONORS

Walter L. Bush Jr. '51 of Edina, Minnesota, has been honored with the inaugural George M. Steinbrenner III Sport Leadership Award by the U.S. Olympic Foundation. Bush, chairman of the board for USA Hockey, has served as secretary of the U.S. Olympic Foundation since 1997.

Alison Crocker '06, a three-time NCAA All-American and World Cup competitor in crosscountry skiing, has won the prestigious NCAA Top VIII Award, which honors outstanding senior studentathletes.

Tim Brooks '64 won a 2007 Grammy Award for Best Historical Album based on recordings from his book, Lost Sounds: Blacks and the Birth of theRecording Industry, 1891-1922 (University of Illinois Press).

Jim Newton '85, longtime reporter and editor for the L.A. Times who covered the city's 1992 riots and the murder trial of O.J. Simpson, has been named the newspapers editorial page editor.

Peter Volanakis '77 is the new president of Corning Inc. He joined the Corning, New York-based telecommunications equipment supplier in 1982 as a market development specialist in the optical products division.

Whitney Johnson '78 is the new chairman of the board of directors of Earthwatch Institute, an international nonprofit based in Maynard, Massachusetts, that recruits volunteers to work with scientists on field research.

Daniel Dokos '79, a partner with N.Y.C. based Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP, was named Dealmaker of the Year in the corporate debt category by TheAmerican Lawyer. Dokos was recognized for his leadership role in representing JPMorgan, Citigroup and Goldman Sachs in the secured financing for Ford Motor Cos., a loan transaction totaling $18.5 billion and involving 191 institutions.
