John Scott was happy to report that one week before his 80th birthday he had a hole-in-one at the Gasparilla Golf Club in Boca Grande, Fla., his fourth since reaching 75 - and none before that. His handicap continues to rise, so maybe those golden years bring better luck. John retired in 1973 as general counsel of Mobil Oil Company. He and Evvie spend three months every winter at Boca Grande, and by the time you read this, they will be back in their home in Greenwich, Conn.
As I write these notes on February 15 (the editor s deadline)/ it's ten degrees below zero - an appropriate time to mention that Mary and I will visit Eleanor andGeorge Klein at their home in Sarasota for a few days, then meet our three oldest children, and all eight grandchildren, for our annual family reunion, which this year will be April 10-17 in Venice, near Sarasota. The logistics are simple - make reservations a year in advance and rent three cars.
"G. I." Davis wrote thanks for my usual ludicrous birthday card, which arrived on his 80th birthday - he and Marion had just returned from '28 snow-birds luncheon in Naples and here is the rest of his report: "With us were Bill and BarbaraMorton, and Park Chick and his new bride, Elly, a charming gal. The occasion was much fun - all six of us talking at a great rate . . . finally we turned the gavel over to Bill, and all necessary business about the next mini-reunion and the 60th reunion was completed in record time. Bill is in great shape - Park and I are hobbling but happy and very grateful!"
frequently it is necessary to sort out papers on my "Dartmouth desk" at home, and in doing it I found a September clipping reporting the death of Ann Neary at the age of 72. She was highly praised by the Boston Globe as a civic leader in Hamilton, Mass., for 50 years. We all remember her husband, John, for his sparkling wit in the years he served as coeditor, with Jack Herpel, of The '28Campaigner. John died 17 years ago. After John s death, Ann and their family and friends started the John F. Neary Fund to commemorate his work in making the town's new library a reality. Ann left three sons, John, a colonel in the U.S. Army now in Japan; Chris, of Hamilton and Boston; and Michael '73, manager of the Caneel Bay Hotel, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands.
