Ten out of the 71 at the winter dinner meeting on January 25 of the Dartmouth Club of Northwestern Connecticut were "28ers." EvField, a member of the Executive Committee, Rappie Bavier, Steele Smith, Bob Kilgore, ElDrake, Lawson Van Riper, Craig Haines and three wives. Our faithful correspondent failed to identify the wives or the meeting place, but we believe the club meets in Waterbury.
El and Adelaide Drake have left for two months cruising on the Pacific. El will be missed in Heritage Village, for he is one of the drivers of the village ambulance and the mini bus which provides transportation for residents who do not have cars. He will be back in time to plant his vegetable garden.
To save that precious commodity, fuel oil, Jack and Fran Kenerson closed their house at Wolfboro, N.H., for the winter and have been staying at their home in Wellesley Hills. They are looking forward to a trip to Italy and Scotland in late March-April.
Each year the College Secretary publishes a booklet entitled "Dartmouth College Alumni Officers Address List" and we usually scan it carefully for news items. In addition to our class officers, we find Alumni Councilor Myles Lane listed as reported in these columns last year. We learned that Jim McConnon is job placement chairman of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Tucson. Don Solis is secretary of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota, and Upty Bartlett is president of the Dartmouth Club of Rockford, Ill. We also learned that Al Fusonie's son Doug '58, a physician in Greenfield, Mass., is president of the Pioneer Valley Dartmouth Club and Ken Grafs son John '58 is job placement chairman of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Manchester, N.H.
Correct your new Directory by changing BunGoodrich's wife's name to Alma. Bun has been married only once and is still happily married to Alma. I've talked to Alma at several reunions and apologize for my error. As for you, Bun, next time please return your questionnaire!
Parker Chick modestly disclaims being president of the Cape Cod Dartmouth Club as stated here three months ago - he's only V.P. He says they have a great bunch with 40 to 55 attending their meetings the last Tuesday of every month at 12 at Mildred's Chowder House at Hyannis.
Barney Norton has eight grandchildren and adds, "Not as many as Tim Paige but still plugging along."
We're glad to see the Directory is being used ... a card from Roy Myers says he spent the day with Bromo Schmelzer in Clearwater Beach, Fla. The next day he was off to Utah to start a nationwide lecture tour for a month. Roy, is it still "The Romance of Words."
Our sympathy goes to Bob Nespor on the death of his wife in January at their home in Westport, Conn., and to Don Dodd whose wife died last September.
Over four years ago Snub Pollard retired from the Memphis Publishing Co. News of his busy retirement comes from the Phillips Exeter Academy Bulletin. He worked with the censustakers in 1970-71, then was appointed for a two-year term as foreman of the Shelby County Grand Jury. Snub and Ginnie have enjoyed trips to Vienna, Salzburg, and Budapest and the most recent one to London and Amsterdam.
The ice storm which hit the Hartford, Conn., area early in January left the Cal Billings without electricity and heat for three days, but they were glad to have a fireplace and gas range. Cal says some people were without electricity and heat for five days and didn't even have water.
Honie Westhaver and Mona had a busy summer after reunion. They report short but pleasant get-togethers with the Baviers, LarryMartins, Cuddy Gardners, Red Edgars, MylesLanes, and Frank Thurston. They were delayed in returning to Hawaii as Mona's mother had a mild heart attack, but is now doing fine.
Otto Sokol responded to a letter asking about his activities with a very interesting account of how he happened to get to Dartmouth two years after coming to this country from Vienna. He gives the credit to Dave Strong '24. After recovering from a series of operations, he was married last May to Peggy, a cousin of his first wife who died six years ago. She is 18 years his junior and they are living happily in Cape May, N.J.
Hank and Helen Graupner took a Mediterranean-Black Sea cruise on the Gripsholm last fall which they enjoyed very much. Bud Wesselman '27 and Ray Barker '23 were aboard. Hank says, "I like cruising ... if you've had enough driving ... packing and unpacking ... waiting for planes and trains ... hassels about rooms in hotels etc., cruising is the thing ... I grant you it is an 'older' group of folks ... but ... well aren't we all!"
Ed Walsh '29 posed visiting classmatesDuke Barto and John Bryant under a familiar picture in his Potomac, Md., home.
