John Van Raalte, who has long earned his daily bread in the investment and securities business on Manhattan, recently talked by phone to Jack Jansing, the latter at his office at 110 Wall Street. Jack, said John, is one of two partners who own Independent Election Corporation of America, a firm which provides proxy mailings and other services for many brokerage houses. Jack and wife Shelley live in Locust Valley on Long Island. Maybe some of you Dartmouth brokers and traders can steer some business toward Jack. I don't know how many '48s are in the brokerage business, but certainly John, Al Fritzsche in Mystic, Conn., Ed McLaughlin in San Francisco, Jim McLauglin in New York, DickRussell in West Palm Beach and Jay Rutledge in Oakland are a few of them. The late, bereaved Lee "Bud" Gold, who recently passed from among us, was another. Give Jack a call if there is any possibiliy his line of activity in the field of investments could augment your own.

A friend in Hanover recently passed me a copy of the Dartmouth Medical SchoolAlumni Magazine which contains an item on our own Dr. Bill Ivins, resident with Cathryn in Huntington, also on Long Island. Bill was of the class of '51 at DMS before he went on to Harvard Med. He has specialized in pediatrics. The item mentions that Bill has changed little in appearance over the years, probably a tribute to his active life in his north shore community.

Fellow '48s may be aware that Coach Paul Cormier's Dartmouth basketball team in the just completed season, for the first time in years beyond memory, won as many Ivy League games as it lost, finishing with a 7-7 record. Additionally, the team won more other games that it lost, a great improvement which justified the new enthusiasm for the sport now seen in Hanover, where, I'm advised, plenty of noise is generated in Thompson Arena. All of which reminds Bob Douglas of Houston of one of the Green's great historic games when many '48s were still on campus, a game played in Alumni Gym back in February 1949. Eddie Leede was captain and playing his final season for our College on the Hill. The opponent for underdog Dartmouth in this particular game was mighty Holy Cross, national champion, winner of the NCAA the previous year, led by the incomparable Bob Cousy, who went on to achieve miracles in the NBA, and featuring such greats as Frank Oftring and George Kafton. Players for Dartmouth in addition to Ed were the well-remembered Wes Field '50, Dick Buckley '50, Red Rowe '49, Joe Sullivan '49, and the incomparable Emil Hudak '50. Doug remembers that every seat in the gym was filled and that many students had climbed the slanting steel beam rafters, putting some of these spectators almost out over the court. Probably few of the wildly cheering onlookers actually expected Dartmouth to beat Doggie Julian's mighty Cross, this in spite of the Green's 9-2 record as of that point in their season. Perhaps strangely enough, however, Ed Leede says he did expect Dartmouth to win, this as Field, Hudak and he had previously competed successfully against most of the Crusaders in the Catskills "Borscht Circuit" when they had played for various highly competitive summer hotel amateur teams. The contest was a screamer, with roar after roar from the tightly-packed crowd as inspired Dartmouth held its own. Believe it or not, we eventually won. Ed could not remember the precise final score when he reminisced last week about the game, 38 years later, but he remembers it as one of the high points of his illustrious hoop career in Hanover. Doug, who remembers being on the edge of his seat throughout the game, also remembers that the Green won, 50-46. Holy Cross went on again to win the NCAA, and, Bob believes, also the NIT. One for Dartmouth's book of sports memories. Ed today still supports his alma mater with his personal time and funds from his position as a successful Texas oil finder.

Class agent Bud Elliott asks that each of us participate when his agents contact us in this year's Alumni Fund Drive in support of our Dartmouth. Likewise it is not too early to note that the '48 Fortieth Reunion will be held only a little over a year from now in June 1988. Earl Chambers and BudGedney are beginning to develop the program, and it's not too early to start making your own plans. Let's get a good turnout and have the kind of fun which I understand each of the past '48 reunions has produced. It's your class, so make the most of it. Be in the Granite State in '88!
