Brett Matthews was one of only 20 college juniors nationwide to win the Time College Achievement Award. Matthews is a history major and co-captain of the 1987-1988 football team. Two years ago he was a founder of a network of 78 colleges that raised $66,000 for a famine relief program. Last year he co-founded the student newspaper Common Sense, a publication that tries to "present all sides of issues facing Dartmouth, in a rational, unemotional manner." Matthews will receive a $2,500 prize.

Five other Dartmouth juniors—Stephen J. Carlotti, Elizabeth Cuervo, Karen N. Eggleston, Andrew C. Glass and Stephanie Yen—were selected as finalists and will receive $250.
