A prospectus prepared for the revenue refunding bonds issued earlier this year gives a nice capsule view of Dartmouth. Among the report's observations:
• The College's Hanover campus occupies about 265 acres and contains about 110 buildings which house 3 million square feet of space. As of June 30, 1986, the book market value of the College's property, plant and equipment was $166.6 million, up from $147.9 million in 1985. Dartmouth also owns about 400 rental housing units rented to faculty, staff and married students.
• About 4,130 undergraduate students and 1,000 graduate students are currently enrolled at the College. Some 2,850 students live in 46 student residence halls and on the average consume 45,000 meals per week. About 460 students live in fraternities and sororities.
• Students are taught by an instructional staff of about 500 in the Arts and Sciences. Some 300 of these hold regular faculty positions; about two-thirds of faculty members hold tenure.
Evidently the money men liked what they saw. Standard and Poor's gave the Big Green an "AA + " and Moody's an "AA."
