Word has come of the death of Arthur "Art" Smith in Toledo on February 21, thus we lose another of our valiant band.
The women of Dartmouth are certainly doing themselves proud: basketball Ivy- League Champions!
A letter from Ginny Burner, widow of "Ike" Burner, reports that she has left Decatur, where they had their home for 59 years, and has moved into a new retirement enclave in Naperville, 111., ten minutes from son Jim and a half hour from her son David. She had health problems and a rough winter alone and is glad to be near the boys.
Walt Vomlehn recently celebrated his 90th birthday, which we believe to be the first for the class. His son, Walter Jr., M.D., '53, write that the celebration took place at the latter's home in Christiansburg, Va., and that Walt's son, David '80, flew in from Austin, Tex., where he is a computer consultant. Walt and his wife, Helene, have been living nearby for the past two years in Warm Hearth Village (418 Showalter Center, Blacksburg, VA 24060). Helene has suffered from health problems in recent years, but Walt has provided dedicated and loving care, his son says. Walt remains an avid reader, thrives on innovative thinking and is an insightful commentator on national and international affairs, as well as on the Hanover scene. The son and grandson find much pleasure in witnessing the grandparents sharing the satisfaction of over 60 years of Dartmouth experience.
Early replies to Whitey's notice about our September mini-reunion name several who will not be able to make it for health reasons, including Bridy Bridenbaugh, Bill Bunting, Joe Leavitt, Eddie Griffin, Dick Nye, and Bob McCready. Dick and Margaret Holden will be there, as will Nate Bugbee, but not Dory.
Larry Leavitt's Alumni Fund letter will undoubtedly produce some news which will be welcome to Scoof and me.
News does not always come easily to this corner, so here's a challenge to you guys; write me an answer (in not more than 50 words) to this question: What professor, course, or academic experience at Dartmouth affected you most deeply and why?
