We note sadly the death of two classmates, Mott Garlock and Sam S. Morris. Obituaries will appear later.
Reunion was by every standard a success. We broke attendance records and Alumni Fund records. Our 60th-reunion attendance was twice as large as our nearest competitor, the class of 1928, with 112 including 75 classmates. Our 60th reunion gift was more than $350,000. Ted Geisel sent last minute regrets; he had a good excuse he was receiving an honorary degree at Princeton. Polly Hill, daughter of Ken Hill, opened her house in Norwich to show us her collection of restored wall paintings for which she is achieving fame. Ken and Harle Montgomery entertained the class with cocktails at Montgomery House. Rollins Chapel was the scene of a moving memorial, service conducted by the Reverend James Crawford '58 of Boston's Old South Church, son of Henry Crawford. A total of 396 classmates were on the list of the deceased.
The class dinner featured a talk by Jere Daniell '55 (Class of 1925 Professor) on New England towns. Gertie Wheldon made some touching remarks and Billee Jenkins composed and read the following: Today we reminisce on Memory Lane Counting our blessings but with pain. We mourn the passing of 1925's sons But are comforted by their work well done. Their widows have memories of yesteryear And treasure 1925's friendship sincere. So let us give thanks for their dear College And the joys it brought us we gratefully acknowledge.
Dutch Schroedel, our hardworking assistant head agent (helping out CurtAbel), reports some health problems this past fall and winter: three hospital visits in connection with the "flu," heart irregularities, and phlebitis. His wife of 55 years, Florence, suffering from Parkinson's disease and other problems, is hospitalized at home with nurses around the clock; this sadly has kept them close to home for the past four years. Prior to this, they traveled extensively - to Honolulu, Arcadia, Calif., and Scottsdale, Ariz., to visit friends and also on the Royal Viking cruise to the North Cape (which we note several of our classmates, including your scribe, have taken and heartily recommend). Winter vacations were spent for many years at Vera Beach, Fla., at the Treadway Inn, run by JohnPackard, and at Hillsborough Beach, Fla. Dutch retired in 1968 after a long and distinguished career as a project engineer, vice president, and general manager of Turner Construction Company which is engaged in construction projects all over the world.
Larry Welch, writing from Huntington Beach, Calif., finds no '2ss in his area but attends the Orange County Dartmouth Club, keeps busy by working in a local department store, and gets in a 90-ish round of golf now and then.
Larry Leavitt turns out to be a member of the '25 sailing fleet, with his 17-and-a-half-foot Explorer Lares, which has its home port in Lake Sunapee, N.H. Miriam Howe, widow of Jim Howe, writes from Cockey sville, Md., to report that she has moved into a Quaker retirement community there and is not far from Baltimore. She still summers in Vermont, where she is near her son and grandchildren. She will not be able to be with us at reunion as she will be at a nephew's wedding. Her son, Jim '57, still teaches at UVM and grandson Jim '82 is in his second year of medical school there.
A1 Westfall will not be able to make reunion, which is understandable since he has recently returned home for the eighth time in the past four years from the local hospital after suffering from seizures (blackouts). His wife has been either bedridden or confined to a wheelchair since 1979. A1 hears from Rad Tanzer, Chet Eaton, and Dave King now and then.
Fred Webster sends what is becoming common bad news: two years of health problems double pneumonia, eightmonth siege of shingles, and an eye implant but he is now fighting to get back to normal. He finds Palm Beach expensive but well worth it though he does not get around to see any of our many classmates now in Florida.
Thought for the day: How stupid of Noah not to swat those two mosquitos as they came up the gangplank.
