Copy of a letter addressed to Norman McCulloch Jr. '50 (Chairman of the Board of Trustees) has been received by me. The letter's author was our own Max Field. In the letter, Max recommended that the Trustees change the name of Dartmouth College to Dartmouth University so that it can take its rightful place with all the other Ivy League universities. He does not expect this change to take place in a hurry perhaps by 2,000 A. D. What with the training of the new president, choosing a new alma mater, checking distribution of sex kits, the Trustees are very busy.
We have had a good note of thanks from Marion Monahan for the memorial book placed in the Library in memory of Ted. Ginny McKee also thanks the class. She hopes (and so do we all) that she will come to our 55th reunion. She and Hank rarely missed a reunion, either a mini or major.
Dave Russell and Frank Hardy, learning that this is to be my last column of class notes before my retirement, have sent me warm notes of appreciation. Frank adds, "All is well with me and my family older, more senile, but wiser."
Since it is my last, I want to take this opportunity to thank the officers, living, who have been so much help to me over the past eight years. I stress living because I think I have already make it clear how much Page Worthington and Bill Dewey and the others meant to me and to the class. I may not mention all because I, too, am getting senile.
Jeff Davis, our 50th reunion chairman and now our acting president has been a great help and worked so hard for the class. Sam Cunningham is a meticulous treasurer. Mannie Sprague and Bob Niebling have run the Alumni Fund campaigns with new records set every year. I have been Bob's roommate at the Hanover Inn on several Class Officers' Weekends and he hardly snores a bit. The perennial Newsletter Editor, Bob Fox has grown bald serving you. I think it's 27 years now! And I quit at eight! Jud Pierson, your Bequest Chairman, grew up with me. We schooled together from the 7th grade on. I'm one month older to the day, but he has shown me little respect. He's not only our 8.C., but also that for the Alumni Council. Jack Manchester, our mini-reunion chairman, has done a terrific job in organizing and planning our get-to-gethers. The Manchester home at Dana Road is not quite the Bedlam Manor of Theriault days, but we are all more sedate now. John Monagan took over a column for me, back in December, as assistant secretary. He had readers clamoring for more.
Two former officers, not current, have been a great help to us. George Drowne, my predecessor, gave me my first briefing and outlined my duties. Wes Beattie, the former Alumni Coordinator, now a help to Mannie Sprague on the corporate giving to the Alumni Fund is a tireless worker for the class. His research into the history of Alumni Award winners was absolutely amazing, his write-ups always complete and amusing.
I may have missed one or two officers. I hope not, but there's that senility problem. You of '33 have been extremely fortunate in having these dedicated men working for you. I expect such will continue as replacements come on scene. So long!
