Boy, do I have some good news for you! The class of 1984 has made a tremendous impact on the Big Green with the announcement that James Freedman has been selected President of Dartmouth College. Many of you may not remember Jim from our days at Dartmouth. Few of you have sat in the library discussing the works of Goethe with him. Fewer still have beaten him at beer pong. The fact that Jim never attended Dartmouth may have something to do with this. Now, I know what you're saying; If he never went to Dartmouth, how can he be a member of the class of 1984? Well, it's simple: I decided. That's right, it was a unilateral decision on the part of yours truly. I figured that making him one of us would be good for both of us; Jim wants to develop ties to the College as quickly as possible, and what better way to accomplish this than to make him a member of the class. What's in it for us? Well, I'm sure that Jim realizes his duty as the newest member of the class—to hold a party for his classmates on Harvard weekend every year until our 50th reunion. In conclusion, Jim, let me just say, your classmates are all very proud of all you've accomplished.
I realized what type of reputation your class secretary has. You think I make up stories just so they sound better, and most of the time, I do. However, the following stories are fact, or as close as things get in this column. Mark Montgomery is teaching at an all-girls Catholic high school in Boston. To top it all off, I was recently hired to teach at an all-Jewish Catholic high school in New York.
A letter from Sonia Chae reports that Wendy Zimmer will be married in June. Wendy will not be marrying Sonia; instead she has opted for a life of conjugal bliss with Judson Reis II '83. Sonia has little to say about her own circumstances and I have little to add, except that the return address of her letter is Jersey City, which speaks volumes in itself.
Julie Kielty was married to Michael Connolly in March. Julie, according to the newspapers, will retain her name professionally and works for a law firm in New York. I think that when I get married, I'll opt to retain my name unprofessionally. It has a much better ring to it.
I recently attended the wedding of Kenny Ackerman to Debbie Trust. In attendance was Sarah Mills, currently finishing her first year at the University of Virginia Law School. Sarah, who refused to sit in her assigned seat throughout the reception, continually pestered me with sordid details of the lives of various members of the class. It is truly unfortunate that I can't really remember who any of them were. Perhaps if I told you what I did know, you, the loyal reader, might be able to fill in the details. Someone is out in California, while some other people are going to law school in the East. Know who I'm talking about? If so, please drop me a line, so I can fill the rest of the class in.
By the time you read this, Ann Armbrecht will be married to Peter Forbes '83. The two will be wed in late April, somewhere in West Virginia. By marrying into our class, Peter will now be eligible to be invited to all the gala events that President Freedman will be throwing for his classmates. I should warn the rest of you. Other members of the Dartmouth alumni may not be as honorable as Peter. Once they start to realize the advantage of marrying a member of our class, we will become the most sought-after brides and grooms in history. To counteract this, I suggest that we no longer fraternize with any members of the Dartmouth family.
While I'm on the subject of class news-letter editors, rumor has it that Viva Hardigg is living in Seattle, working in a bakery. I'm unsure of exactly what she is doing, but I'm hoping she'll send me several dozen cheese danish at the earliest possible moment.
Howard Jones is working as a consultant for Arthur Andersen in Hartford. Now, I don't know who this Andersen character is, but he sure seems to need a lot of consultants.
Class President Lucia Jackson will be beginning Yale Divinity School in the fall. Lucia will be studying for her divinity degree. When it is awarded, we will all have to refer to her as "The Divine Lucia Jackson." The awarding of this degree will also mean that Lucia is not allowed to yell at me anymore.
Well, Class Officers Weekend is rapidly approaching, and yours truly plans on being the uninvited houseguest of our new President. I'm sure he won't mind. After all, that's what classmates are for, right?
The wedding of Elizabeth Evans '83 and Randall Bodner '81 was well attended by Dartmouth friends, who gathered for this photo. The Bodners are living in Boston, Mass., where she will be attending medical school and he is an attorney.
