Another of our classmates has succumbed to the grim reaper. Hack Davenport died on May 11 in Ogunquit, Maine. On a more upscale subject, as a result of a birthday greeting we received a note from Rodg Harrison, in which he advises that life at RD 4, Box 141A, River Road, Chestertown, MD 21620 is extremely pleasant. "Our move to the Eastern Shore has been all that we hoped for—away from the tumult, traffic and taxes of suburban Big Apple survival. Small town life is great. Everyone is friendly, full of parties, and you say hello to everyone on the street as you know most of them. And those you don't know you'll meet very shortly. We're both happy and healthy and looking forward to the 50th—and maybe even a football excursion this fall."
Henry Glovsky continues to serve his community, having just been elected to the Board of Directors of the Beverly National Bank, and its parent corporation, Beverly National Corporation. A lawyer by trade, Hank is a former Massachusetts State Senator and before that a State Representative for Beverly, Hamilton, Wenham, and Manchester. He was a former president of the North Shore Community Arts Foundation and held the same position with the United Fund Central of the North Shore.
Henry Kissinger has just been named a director of the Union Pacific Corporation to take the place of Moose Taylor, who retired from the board after a long association.
Al Abbott from White River Junction responds with thanks to a birthday card and suggests that he thinks Dave McLaughlin has had to take the rap for some errors made by the previous administration. "It seems to be a thankless job, one which he should be glad to be leaving."
Speaking about thankless jobs, we are reminded of the letter from our classmate Mr. Anonymous which was quoted in "39 Out" (July '87) and will not be quoted herewith because of limited space. If you recall, he spoke at length and with feeling about what he called the "Inner Group." He'll not get a response from this corner, but he did draw one from our Inner Group President, Bert MacMannis. In a letter to Bob Davidson he writes, "How often have we publicized the fact that anyone wishing to become a member of the Executive Committee (it is presumed that all members in good standing of the "Inner Group"—Ed. note) can do so. During the last few years only three men have responded. At our fall executive committee meeting we always announce that every classmate in the area is invited to attend and vote at the meeting. This has encouraged a good turnout. We have done the same thing at the major minireunions such as the Williamsburg and Baltimore functions with good participation and will do so at the Charlotte reunion in 1988. I would have hoped that this would dispel any thought that a small inner group is trying to run the show."
Last February your scribe, preparing for a visit to Bermuda for a tennis outing, wrote Dr. Beech Chapin, the only listed '39 on the Islands, with a suggestion that we get together. When our letter arrived Beech was busy catching up after a trip to the mountains of northwestern Mexico over Christmas, and then to Ireland, where he generally spends at least the spring and fall. He closed his office in NYC in June 1983, and "fled to Bermuda leaving his medical practice to the bureaucrats with their corny old-fashioned notions of sociocommuno pap to continue slowly strangling traditional American values. There has been a movement here in Bermuda for me to start again, as there is no one on the islands doing the type of super-specialization practice that I did—a kind of research physician." We didn't receive Beech's letter until we returned to the States, though as it turned out, he was apparently in residence during our brief stay. Maybe next year.
"On July 23, 1986 under my Doctor's advice I had to place my husband Charles E.Osgood, professor emeritus, in a nursing home as he had Alzheimer's disease. It is very sad that this happened to such a very distinguished man, known all over the world." This sad note came from Cynthia, Charlie's wife, in early July of this year. She can be reached at 304 E. Mumford Dr., Urbana, IL 61801.
