Congratulations to all whose contributions resulted in the class exceeding our Alumni Fund dollar goal of $155,000. Under the great first-year leadership of Welles Fendrich, the $160,243 raised this year is certainly a testament to the hard work and enthusiasm of Welles and his team of fund co-workers. Not only was the amount in excess of last year, but when our 103.4 percent of objective was added to our participation index of 61.9 percent the combined rating of 165.3 placed '46 second only to '49 in the group V classes of 1946-1952! Next year, in addition to exceeding our dollar goal, let's surpass this year's overall 65 percent Alumni Fund participation index.
Mary and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner and evening last July with Bob and LizPoet, hosted by Reg and Nancy Pierce. The Poets were in Hanover to participate in the Alumni College, following which they were moving on to eastern Canada and the Maine coast before returning to home base in Fullerton, Calif. Bob was on "terminal leave," with full retirement in August.
Further recognition for Stan Feldberg comes with the news that he has been reelected to the Brandeis University board of trustees for a five-year term. Congratulations again, Stan!
A recent article in the May/June 1988 issue of Engineering Dimensions describes Sam Florman as engineering's "voice who bridges the gap between the knowledge held by that profession and the ways of the world in which it must operate." In the article Sam spoke about engineering education, engineering responsibility, and engineering achievement, stating, "We simply cannot afford to leave our affairs in the hands of people who do not understand anything about technology. Nor can we afford to leave our technology in the hands of people who have an impoverished sense of what life is all about." Indeed, Sam's clear exposition of the role of a liberal education in the development of sound leadership is an excellent reflection on the value to him of his Dartmouth B.S. and C.E. degrees in his very successful civil engineering career.
Again, it is my sad duty to report the death of two classmates. On February 2 Ernest Barker Vogt died at his home in Louisville, Ky. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie, and two sons, Charles and Thomas. Robert Oliver Craig Jr. died on July 13, also at his home, in Morresville, N.C. His survivors include his wife, Catherine, daughter Gail, and son Robert.
