Just when I thought we'd have nothing to report in two years, along come DeanEsserman and Rich Pender. Dean was just appointed counsel to the Chief of the N.Y.C. Transit Police, which makes young Dean one of the six senior officers with that agency. Those of you still using Connecticut tokens should not view this as a chance of a lifetime. Rich Pender passed the last exam for becoming a chartered financial analysta truly significant achievement. Now we can trust Rich with money and authority. Hey, the guy was always a benevolent dictator to me during those Thayer years.

The way that I look at baby announcements is that here finally is proof that the couple has been having "fun." So here's to those who gave a rouse. John Gilbertsonand Kathy Harper had a daughter, Carter Kathryn, on October 19; Joe and Kim Henley had a son, Robert Donovan, on August 2; and finally Puddie Haugie Sword and her husband, Richard, had a little girl, Bayless, on October 9. Of course, that was their second so no suspense there.

The rest of us are catching up, with some just recently forging the first link in the chain. Michael Geilich married Cindy Mahler over the summer and had the courage to have "Right Time" play at the reception. Geez, those guys get a lot of free publicity. Also attending the wedding were Ned Pepper and Megan Murray '80.

Bill Barron checked in after a long silence to announce his engagement to Londoner Fiona Charlton. Bill's commutes between London and New York for the law firm of Davis Polk (where he will be a junior partner shortly) obviously brought more than just frequent flyer points. The only potential problem is that when Bill mentions Dartmouth, Fiona figures that he's speaking of the Earl.

Hey Phil O., how about planning a minireunion where we all go over to England and thank the Earl for his gift all those years ago.

Or we could go to France and mooch off Mike Narkewicz who recently moved to Paris for a two-year term of health-related research at the Centre de Recherches sur la Nutrition in Meudon. Mike claimed to be "awaiting" their first child. Mike, is that the same as "expecting?"

Or we could all jet to Mainz, West Germany, to mooch off David 'B3 and HollyClark Grainger. Dave just finished his Ph.D. in biomaterials sciences in Salt Lake City while Holly was researching animal and plant microbiology and Nathaniel (19 months). Holly mentioned skiing at Alta and Snowbird on occasion with JoanieCrane, Line Cleveland, Harry Griffith, and Bill Hicks. The Graingers will be overseas for at least one year while Dave does some postdoctoral work.

Tom O'Neil took pity on me after my "sabbatical" column and gave me the scoop on the Big Green crowd in Baltimore, some of whom were recently mentioned here so I'll limit the names. Our esteemed class treasurer and his wife, Claudia, should be having their first child soon. As Tom put it, everyone is hoping for a boy since the idea of Charlie's genes in a little pink sundress is a frightening thought. Tom himself has been with the U.S. attorney's office since March, 1986. He and Nancy, a tax specialist with Piper and Marbury, had their first child, Caley Elizabeth, last April. BruceBierman, who was at the christening, works for Agway in New Hampshire. T.J.Cranie and his wife, Ellen, also visited the O'Neils from their home in California. T.J. was interviewing third-year students at some eastern law schools. He specializes in securities law and Ellen free lances parttime writing legal briefs. Brian (four), Stephen (two), and someone new soon take up the rest of the Crane's time.
