One of the continuing objectives of all class officers is to "recapture" classmates who have not stayed in close touch. That's especially true for the class of 1940 now that our 50th Reunion looms. Deane McGowen is one such recapture—though he hasn't been exactly hidden all these years, and has been a regular giver to the Alumni Fund. Recently Deane broke the silence:

"Came to Dartmouth from Mt. Hermon along with Larry Durgin, Bill Sinclair, Gil Myers. Left Dartmouth mid-sophomore year. Dean Neidlinger and I had a difference of opinion about my scholastic ability. He won. Worked for The New York Times (with a 58month interruption for the U.S. Army) for 42 years, 32 as a bylined sportswriter. Over the years I covered Ivy League football, heptagonal track and field, pro football Jets and Giants, Islanders and Rangers, Yankees and Mets, Knicks and Nets, and a good deal more. Was.a member of the Baseball Writers Association, New York Boxing Writers, New York Press Club.

"I actually had more to do with Dartmouth as a sports writer than I ever did as an undergraduate. Wrote an Ivy League football column during the heyday of Bob Blackman and Jake Crouthamel. Great years!

"Was married in '41, widowed in '70, now married again to Anita Andrews. Net: seven children and 12 grandchildren. Retired from the Times in 1982. Finally, fed up with traffic congestions in the Metropolitan area (Teaneck, N.J.), sold my home and moved to the Northeast Kingdom (Newport, Vt., hard by the Canadian border) in 1987. Not sure if skiing is my next sport.

"Looking forward to the 50th, my first."
