It was so good to hear from Hooker Horton in response to our class birthday card, after a long silence, that we have just written him a thank-you letter. He lives at 2260 SW 22nd Avenue, Delray Beach, FL 33445, and perhaps you will wish to send him a note after reading his message, as follows: "Dear Charlie: Your concern about me is really appreciated. I am diabetic and have been blind for several years, so I am dictating a note in reply. We have two sons and four grandchildren. The oldest grandson graduated from West Point and is in Panama. A granddaughter is at Syracuse, another will be ready for college next year, and another is in high school." (You will remember, I am sure, that Hooker was the star fullback on Dartmouth's only national football championship team, in 1925.)
Chuck Baker is still practicing law in Painesville, Ohio, and in acknowledging his birthday card he brought us up to date regarding his wife, Marie. As you will recall, she had a very serious fall a year ago January. She is now much better and able to walk with a walker, although she still has a nurse during the day.
Chuck Field had a severe heart attack in May 1987 and was doing well until September when he suffered cardiac arrest. Because he has difficulty with his right hand, he dictated the following to his wife, Jo. "I am progressing well and walk more each day with the help of a safety belt. Since I feel fine, I am getting restless and am sure tired of being confined to a nursing home. I will still be here for a while until Jo recovers from a bad fall and leg injury."
In January, president Rog Bury wrote all classmates that he had reluctantly accepted the resignation of Tom Gillespie, editor for 17 years of 1927's outstanding newsletter The Speakeasy. In his letter of resignation Tom said, "My endowment of the medical profession and of hospitals during the past year has left me with insufficient energy to continue." As we hope that 1988 will be a better one for Tom, we also wish the best of luck to Bob Bliss, who will be Tom's successor in this valuable and important assignment.
Next month, we hope to have more cheery news.
