Dear Class: Lots of notes and letters came in, just missing the deadline for the Summer issue ... so here we go. A quickie from Ive Olson, who holds forth in Alexandria, Va., as I.M. Olson & Associates, to say that all continues well.
Stet Whitcher, whose work as treasurer has kept us solvent for lo these many years, sent on the treasurer's report black ink all the way! We'll be fine as long as we keep paying the dues. Stet attended the Alumni College (Subject: China Today) and will have a report for us. He also sent along a nifty letter from Rudy Horky. Excerpts: "A lot of Dartmouth here in Chicago during March and April. Our Annual seminar was headed by Bill Cook and Ted Mitchell. We had about 65 attendees, which is pretty good for here. You can tell Joe Burnett that I participated in the Chicago Telethon. I feel better in some ways about the situation (in Hanover). At least, having some of the movers and shakers come out here to see us hicks makes us feel closer to the college. I sign all my letters these days with a Wah Hoo Wah—Rudy."
Ned Jacoby sent on a copy of the Phil Booth '47 article (reproduced in the '42 newsletter) all about growing up in Hanover during the time our class was there. I sent it on to the Alumni Magazine. I heard from Lee Bassett a while back and then had the pleasure of meeting him for the first time in June while he was in Old Lyme visiting his sister, Shirley Ely. Lee had seen Scottyand Loomie Rogers earlier this year.
A note with sad news came in from JerrySchnitzer during the summer. "I'm sorry to report that my wife, Vee, passed on May 24. She was a devoted mother, a beautiful companion, and a gifted public school teacher who made a difference. Vee was a 'class act.' Thanks for all the remembrances Jerry." We add our sympathies to all the others, Jerry.
I'm reminded by several classmates to pass on the news that Scotty Treeman and his wife, Pat, have switched from Miami to Vero Beach, joining our growing "1940 South." Another address change from PatTimothy, who has just joined the 70-plus club: 105 Tega Cay Place #1OO2, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082.
Tom Ballantyne wraps up the Florida story, living just above the surf line in Melbourne Beach close enough to mix it up with the Vero bunch. Tom played in the 70-plus bracket of the squash nationals at Princeton (GASP!). Also, swimming, golf, and clams and oysters with Bill Bumsted.Don McMahon passed through recently. Tom summers on Long Island, as he puts it, "some charity-oriented friends tolerate my presence until the first frost of fall nips at my thin-blooded ankles."
OK, everybody think 50th!
