John M. Ryan was installed as the president of the Virginia Bar Association in Williamsburg, Va., in the 100 th anniversary year of the founding of that organization. He will devote much of his time during 1988 to addressing the challenging issues that confront the legal profession. The Virginia Bar has a distinguished history, beginning with our first U.S. Supreme Court Justice, John Marshall. Congratulations, John.
Peter Kelsey advises that he became a grandfather three times during 1987. As a member of the Alumni Council committee on student life, Pete has worked with some fabulous undergraduates, including Karen Avenoso '88, recent Rhodes Scholar-elect. The old issue of student drinking, impacted by the change in state law raising the minimum drinking age to 21, continues to challenge the College in ways not fully met. Peter applauds the focus of President Freedman designed to carry the College along the high road in maintaining an "opening of the American mind." Pete asks for the patience and understanding of all alumni as the policies for 1988 and the fu- ture are developed.

Further word from Atlanta, where Dr. Tom Aaberg is now serving with the Emory Medical School, is that both Tom and his wife really like their new situation. They have a son who is a freshman at the University of Wisconsin medical school.
Ron Snow gathered with over 90 debaters for legendary debate coach Herb James, who is retiring. Professor James has probably done as much to improve the analytical and communications skills of Dartmouth alumni as anyone living. A disciplined mind combined with a kindly, congenial, and patient spirit made Herb James a mentor for generations of debaters.
When John Whiteley takes time from his work in the department of pathology at York Hospital, and organizes his Alumni Fund effort, someone will be calling on you. If you are an agent, get your calls made. If you are a potential donor, you can make no better use of your money than supporting Dartmouth College.
