Attorney Barry Mahoney is a senior staff associate with the National Center for State Courts, a nonprofit organization devoted to serving the needs of the nation's state courts through research, education, information services, and direct technical assistance. In recognition of the outstanding quality of his work at the National Center's Institute for Court Management, Barry received the National Center's 1987 Award of Excellence. With the National Center since 1973, Barry has been heavily involved in a number of significant projects such as case flow management, court delay reduction, sentencing alternatives, the use of telephone conferences in civil litigation, state court financing, and a national survey on public attitudes towards courts and justice. Barry has authored or coauthored a number of publications in judicial administration and in related areas such as those described above. He is a member of the Colorado and New York bars, as well as a number of bar associations. He also serves on the board of directors of the Colorado Judicial Institute. Barry earned his LL.B. at Harvard in 1962, and added a Ph.D. in political science at Columbia in 1976.

Our thanks to Dick Aronsohn '60 who sent us a newspaper clipping concerning the style in which Bill Brigiani attended a homecoming football game last fall at the latter's law school alma mater, Rutgers. Wearing top hat and tails, Bill pulled into the tailgate party held on the expansive lawn of the Rutgers University president in a 1929 Cadillac filled with lobster, quiche, and champagne. The article went on to say that at Rutgers homecoming is an event that draws together the members of the college community in a truly memorable way.

From Weston, Conn., Dave Allen writes that he became president of the Consulting Division of Marketing Corp. of America last year and that wife Polly was named president of Alpenblick Sweater.

Meanwhile, from a little to the east in Norwich, Conn., Steve Plank writes that when in New York City recently he had the pleasure of dining out with Wayne and JoanFrench, who had recently vacationed in Hawaii and loved it.

Harry F. Downing Jr. has been elected a vice president and secretary of Farmland Insurance Companies, a unit of the Columbus, Ohio-based Nationwide Insurance organization. Harry is now in charge of Farmland's systems and data processing operations at its home office in Des Moines. He and his wife, the former Sally Heath of Kalamazoo, have two grown children, Nathan 23, and Morgan 20.

Another Ohioan, Craig Harlan, writes that he has enjoyed his first year as vice president and general manager of Brush Wellman, Inc., a producer of beryllium products and specialty metals for the electronics and aerospace industry.

Barclay O. Wellman, president and treasurer of Wellman Brothers, a Jamestown, N.Y., retail furniture and interior design firm, has been promoted to the rank of brigadier general, and now commands the 8,000-troop U.S. Army Reserve, 98th Division headquartered in Rochester, N.Y.
