During a June junket to San Francisco I spent an evening with Pete Zischke, now retired from The Wyatt Company, but otherwise very active in the Bay area. We started with a drink and tour at the Bohemian Club where Pete is a member and chairman of the admission committee. With the lengthy backlog of member applications, it struck me that Pete's chairman role wouldn't be too taxing, but he convinced me otherwise. Lots of Dartmouth and 1952 talk followed during dinner at one of his favorite haunts, Sam's, in the business district. It was nice of Pete to take time out from the family preparations for the wedding of daughter Karen '86 on the following Saturday. Imagine my shock when I learned several weeks later from DickMcDonough that Pete suffered a mild heart attack shortly after our get-together, the kind that the doctor felt might have a good chance of a follow-up rumble, so he spent a few days, including the wedding, in the intensive care unit as a precaution. The good news is that no encore occurred and Pete is back to his normal, active schedule.
And while we're onto good news, Dick also informed me that Bill Montgomeryhas been announced as president-elect of the Alumni Council. Somebody up there has excellent judgment because Bill's interest in and dedication to Dartmouth runs deep. Combine that with fine executive skills and the Alumni Council and all of us will be the beneficiaries. Dick also conveyed the news that Bill Breed recently received congratulations from the College for leading our class to surpassing its 1989 Alumni Fund goal of $215,000. Quite an accomplishment in the face of widely published news that total alumni giving participation dropped from 65 percent in 1988 to 61 percent in 1989.
Well done, Bill!
All of this mention of McDonough and Breed reminds me that I neglected to mention earlier that Bill and Judy hosted a cocktail gathering at their Hanover home to launch the April Class Officers Weekend on Friday evening and Angus and Liz Russell put on a nice spread at their new (and old) home in Norwich Saturday evening after the formal activities were over. Angus and Liz are nearing the completion of the expansion and renovation of a lovely old home up the hill a bit from Norwich center. In addition to the aforementioned Dick (Caroline couldn't make it) and the Breeds, the Zehners, Montgomerys, Norths, Cesaris, and Logans were there.
The class has received an expression of thanks from the Hood Museum for our gift of flower arrangements displayed in the reception area during the past year. The Hood director noted that the flowers strike a welcoming and gracious note at the beginning of a visit to the museum.
Another sad note to convey. JohnFancher passed away in July while on vacation in Vermont.
