By the time this column hits the streets in the November issue, the mystery of Dartmouth's football fortunes under a virtually new coaching staff will have been revealed and President Freedman's exposure to the alumni body will have been expanded considerably via the various festivities scheduled around this fall's home and away games. My brief summer visits to Hanover, discussions with friends in the administration and the community, and glimpses at a couple of early September practices under the Teevens regime suggest that there is ample reason for optimism on all fronts.
Our class continues to make news in the new-venture, retirement, and transfer areas. Pete Taylor, together with some Australia-based investors, recently purchased the international business of Fortune Systems, involved in personal computers. The acquisition required several trips to California from Pete's home base in Monaco in early 1987. Pete will continue to reside in Monaco where he again offers the welcome mat to fellow '52s.
Two classmates have retired from their professional practices. Dr. Don Horrigan, whose last post was head of the department of radiology at Rutgers University, has taken up retirement with Julie in Isle Lamotte, Vt. They migrate all the way south to their condo in Burlington, Vt., for the winter. Dr. Jack Riggio has phased out of dentistry and taken up painting in South Hampton, Long Island. Watch for his work!
Bart Lombardi is on the move with IBM, this time from London to Paris.
Thanks to Peggy Yates for responding to our blank column a few months back with a lengthy letter about husband John Yates from their Artesia, N.M., ranch. John has long been involved in Yates Petroleum, a family oil prospecting and drilling business based in Artesia. The Yateses also devote much of their time to the Arabian horses they breed, raise, and show on their ranch. They specialize in Polish-Arabian critters and now have about 130 purebreds with championship pedigrees. This interest involves regular trips to Poland to augment the herd at the annual auction there. Peggy writes that John's expertise in selecting, breeding, and caring for Arabians is also shared with classmates Jim Gardner and Herb Roth, fellow owners of Vladin, a racer who has fared quite well to date. The nearby photo shows John and Peggy with Herb and Christine Roth, and Vladin's trainer. The cup they are holding was awarded for a first-place finish in an Arabian classic, which made him a leading Arabian money winner in this country. According to Peggy, the Yateses, Roths, and Gardners get together frequently and were scheduled to be present at the Arabian Derby at Delaware Park in September.
