We all received a communication this summer from Pete Barker, chairman of the Alumni Council Nominating and Alumni Trustee Search Committee. Pete reminds us that JohnSteel will complete his tenth year of service and will retire from the Board of Trustees in June 1990. At this November's meeting of the Alumni Council, Pete's committee will propose a nominee to fill the open Alumni Trustee seat on the board. At present, no change in the process of submitting a single candidate will be in effect for this year's nomination. All alumni are urged to submit nominations for this most important position.
Pete often has exhorted us to let him know our thoughts and ideas concerning the administration of the College, but he is not the only classmate to whom we can communicate ideas, praise, complaints, suggestions, etc. Bob Levine represents Tuck School, Bob Woodberry represents Northern California, Bill Pryor is a member-at-large, and past president Dick Barker just joined the Council as a class representative. Talk to them.
We've barely recovered from our 35th Reunion and liere comes John Gillespie with the next event. Our indefatigable minireunion chairman has lined up outstanding class events surrounding Dartmouth Night Weekend and the defeat of Yale. This wonderful football weekend arrives a bit early this year and, editorial deadlines being what they are, I either recommend highly that you attend, or, you are reading a fist of the events that took place:
Friday October 13, pre-parade class cocktail reception/buffet with open bar at the Drake Room, Hanover Inn, followed by parade and bonfire reception in the Overseers Suite of the Inn.
Saturday, October 14, the 1954 class meeting at Thayer Hall at 9:30 (classmates only), tailgate lunch on the A.D./Chi Phi lawns at noon, post-game cocktail reception with open bar at the Faculty Lounge, Hopkins Center. Incidentally, the game will start at 12:30, instead of the usual 1:30, to accommodate television coverage as ESPN Ivy League Game of the Week. Therefore, lunch should start earlier.
Sunday, October 15, Muffins at Mullins hosted by Steve and Carol Mullins at their Turnpike Road home in Norwich from nine to noon.
Now that Dick Page is class president, will he have enough time to fulfill his new responsibilities as chairman of Sedgwick James Limited when that company becomes operational on January 1, 1990? Dick is chairman and CEO of Fred S.James & Co. Inc., the fourth largest United States insurance brokerage firm. The parent company, Sedgwick Group pic of London, announced that Dick will direct all of the group's retail business worldwide with 10,000 employees in 270 offices. In this position, he also will have responsibility for the group's employee benefit consulting and financial services business. When the two companies merged in 1985, Dick was elected deputy chairman of Sedgwick and a director, and subsequently was named vice chairman in 1988.
Gillespie again. The Dartmouth Parents Fund, directed by John, set a new record in raising $572,545 in 1989, with 2,785 parents and grandparents donating to the Fund. That's 32 percent of the total parent and grandparent base. Quite an achievement, but John gives credit where credit is due, pointing out the special assistance received from Don Berlin and Jerry Goldstein.
Following up on Roger Gilmore's appointment as president of the Portland School of Art, Roger can be reached there at 97 Spring Street, Portland, ME 04101, and at home, 145 Greely Road, Cumberland, ME 04021.
Sadly, we note the recent passing of two classmates, Dr. Robert P. Pallatroni of South Dartmouth, Mass., and Marius MaxGeldens in the Netherlands.
