Denver, like Houston, has had a sharp drop in prosperity, but our '53 group is still in place and getting along all right. I reached Wayne Hansen right after an 18-mile bike trip. He's been in Evergreen about three years and retired recently after 30 years on Wall Street, and a few more syndicating loans in L.A. and Colorado. He's skiing, golfing, camping, or playing tennis every day and also using his wood- working hobby in remodeling kitchens. His wife is also a golfer and camper. A son is a contractor in Boulder and a daughter is at Steamboat.

Jack Levine came to Denver with the air force in '54, and came back after BU Law School in '59. He now practices law on his own. Wife Carol is a successful realtor. A son was in the class of '83, one daughter graduated from Cornell Law School in '88 and a second is with D'Arcy Advertising in N.Y.C. Jack is less active in Denver's Dartmouth affairs now, but says it's one of the most sought-after schools.

Hank and Betty Edler live right down the street from the Levines, and they've been in Denver forever. Hank was at Reunion with their daughter Kris, who has been at the MALS graduate program at Dartmouth and is becoming a history teacher. Eight years ago Hank and several other partners founded Kentwood Moore Realty, which now sells hundreds of homes a year. Daughter Katie, who graduated from Puget Sound, works at the firm. She says (and Dad confirms) the market is turning around, boosted by the new airport and convention center. Sounds like a good realtor! Son Howard is training to become a professional pilot, and frequently has Dad as a practice passenger. Hank is past president of the Lions and also the South Suburban Board of Realtors. Also very active in Savio House, home for disturbed but not criminal boys aged 12-18.

Bert Melcher is another native Denverite. After getting his Thayer CE degree and a navy stint (he's still a Naval Reserve captain), Bert worked for the Colorado School of Mines Research Center in environmental and resource planning. Three Mile Island impacted the Research Center, and now Bert has become a successful business broker, appraising and selling smaller companies, but some larger ones too. Bert was a member of the State Highway Commission, and you skiers can thank Bert for straightening out the Vail Pass Highway. A daughter in the class of '82 is a computer software specialist. His wife is secretary to the chairman of the Bank of Denver.

At the end of September, John Shattuck retired as one of the top officers of the Colorado National Bank and its holding company after a career of 30 years. He came to Denver with Swift & Cos. shortly after graduation.

After graduation from CU Law School in '56, Don McMichael (another native), went with a big Denver law firm, then practiced on his own, went into the insurance business for ten years, and went back into law in 1968. He's now a partner in a law firm, specializing in estate planning and probate work. All three children are married and his wife does some substitute teaching.

Roger Ewy has had a successful photography business in Boulder for a number of years with clients like IBM. Now Roger is managing properties while still doing photo consulting. His wife does family counseling and they have four children.

With the recent big gold strikes in Nevada, our prospector Anson Mark hopes he can find similar small particle ore deposits in the Colorado and Wyoming territory he covers. He still finds some oil here and there, and has become proficient in the new technique of horizontal drilling. He lives and works out of Denver, and all three children live in the area.

Sterling Ambler left after freshman year and graduated from CU and the CU Law School. He's practicing law with a partner, and is chairman of a charitable trust for lawyers who need help because of illness or old age. There are some poor lawyers after all! He still skis quite a bit, and often with his 88-year-old father!

So far I've only included here the year- round residents, but in the winter Aspen in particular has a lot of our classmates. Last year, Butch Edgar, Ted Spiegel, GeneGabianelli, and Charlie Buchanan. Word has it that the Spiegels are building a place out there. Just tell us where the key is, Ted.
