Only one more of these Alumni Magazine articles before the great 40th Reunion. Our hard-working chairman Fred Hitt ran a reunion meeting at Don Goss's in Hanover at the end of February. All of the staff was there except your secretary, who was dispatched to Aspen the first week of March to recruit Gabianelli, Edgar, Spiegel,Buchanan, Pearsall, and Dave Florence, who preceded this ski trip with a safari in Kenya with his son. Dave Cost writes that he. ChuckStone, SockSenne, and Pete Ankeny '54 were with most of this same group in Aspen in February. The Sennes are exploring alternatives to Chicagoland by taking a house in Carmel, Calif., for the month of March. Clint Eastwood should keep them safe.
Bill Chamberlin went skiing at Breckenridge, Colo., and hoped to catch up with Bert Melcher, John Shattuck, and DonMcMichael in Denver on the way. Quick, now—were any of you math majors? Our sage investment counsellor, Burt Dorsett was one, and another is William "Fritz"Wolff, working with the U.S. Department of Energy in the nuclear weapons program. After Dartmouth he entered the navy. They sent him to get a master's degree in physics, and he stayed with the navy on board ship and in various ports (including Vietnam) for 18 years, then retired to join the DOE in Washington. He's been working more on dismantlingnuclear plants than building weapons, and he's retiring in January and moving to his beachfront condo in San Diego. Ideally he'd like to keep working part time maintaining Xerox machines or computers. He says the Administration wants sharp cutbacks in defense costs, but the loss of many jobs will be unpopular. At the same time, our government has to hire many skilled Russian nuclear scientists just to keep them from joining the Saddam Husseins of this world.
He keeps in touch with George High, who just retired from the State Department, Bureau of Human Rights, and has taken a new job with an immigration association. They got together recently at a Dartmouth dinner at the Ritz Carlton in Washington.
Our thanks to reliable reporter BobCallender, who was on the scene at the annual Harbour Ridge Dartmouth Golf Jubilee in late January, with more than 70 alumni on hand. The players included Howard Clery, whom Cal says looked great after recovering from a heart attack in December. Also golfing were Bob Simpson, Father Ed Boyle, Pag, and Jim Cartmell,
who has a house in nearby Vero Beach. Also there were Phil Beekman, DaveHalloran, Howie Pitts, and Kent Robinson. A big event was Gail Malin's birthday, attended by many but not hardworking Bob, who couldn't get away.
Our reunion attendance chairman DaveSiegal has a count of 204 definite or probable classmates at this point, with many still not heard from. The old record is 203, and Dave's determined to beat it. Call him at (800) 892- 6054 and tell him "Yes!"
Dave's also very active in the American Cancer Society's New York City Division where he's working on strategy for the next ten years. The Society has an enviable record of funding 25 Nobel Laureates!
