Extra! Extra! Read all about it. Eighty-twos are in the news! Extra! Extra! ... This past month has had my mailbox practically bursting with news clippings on our illustrious classmates. Well, maybe not bursting but quality is bet-

First among our honored number was Dr. Edith Newton Wilson. Edith returned home to Macon, Ga., to serve as commencement speaker at Tattnell Square Academy, her high school. Since earning her degree in geology, Edith has gone on to a master's and a doctorate in sedimentology from Johns Hopkins. She is now living in Houston with Glenn, her husband of two years, and working as a petroleum geologist for Amoco. Upon her return to Macon, Bill Boyd, a local columnist, wrote: "To those who know Dr. Wilson and her family, her success comes as no surprise. Her grandmother, Ellamae Ellis League, was the first woman architect in Macon, and Dr. Wilson's mother, Jean Newton, also is a Macon architect." I have a feeling we'll be hearing more good things from Edith.

Meanwhile, a few miles to the north, the July 16 edition of The Anchorage (Alaska) Times featured a nearly life-size photo of Nancy Pease on the cover of its sports section. Nancy was pictured in mid-stride on her way to an unprecedented fifth consecutive victory in the 28-mile Crow Pass Crossing. Not only did Nancy shatter her own course record (she now holds the five fastest women's times in the race), she also managed to avoid a potentially dangerous run-in with a female black bear and its two cubs.

It doesn't sound like this is your everyday road race.

I received the story on Nancy from GretaMesics Cross, who also told me that the close encounter of the bear kind had been reported nationally in USA Today and on Paul Harve's radio news show. Greta also writes, "While on the subjects of Fame and Fortune, is it true that one of the characters in LA Law is based on our own LA Lawyer Steve Warren? Inquiring minds want to know. Now that Nancy has become a real celeb, she could really benefit from a few sage words from one who has had his moment in the spotlight as a really big winner on Sale of the Century. Steve, if you read this, give Nancy a call."

That's the news from the corner news- stand. Don't forget to tip your paperboy (or girl) and be nice to them come Christmas.
