Chance meetings lead this month's news, the most unlikely of which occurred as I strolled through the lobby of the sprawling Westin resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C., back in mid- August. Lo and behold, there was AlanMoss. He was on the island for, as he put it, "professional development" with his investment banking firm, LEK of Boston. There were about 100 people involved in the long, seminar-filled weekend, all of whom were readily identifiable by their matching- T-shirts.

Alan said that he was enjoying the development, and his job, very much. I'll say this: he had a very professionally developed tan by Sunday afternoon.

Then, maybe a week later, I'm sitting on the lawn at the Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts in Mansfield, Mass., waiting for the start of a double bill featuring the Replacements and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Lo and behold, who strolls up the lawn in front of me but PatrickRutty. Pat was in his last days on the East Coast; by now, he's out at Stanford, studying for an advanced degree in geophysics.

Now for a chance mailing this came to me in an envelope with no return address, on a slip of note paper that was unsigned. The postmark was Boston, which means it could be from roughly a fourth of the class. Here's the note, in its entirety: "Jon Fein-stein is doing very well at Drexel Burnham Lambert. Dan Hannigan was married in August. Geoff Wade is engaged to marry Margaret O'Brien '89 next July. Thanks." If you wrote this, please let me know who you are, just for curiosity's sake. There's no reason to be shy, and I won't embarrass you, I promise.

Finally, a chance discovery. Digging through old mail, I found a postcard the contents of which should have run months ago. My apologies to Michael Silberling, who took time to write all the way from the Philippines. He was there in his capacity as executive in charge of exports to southeast Asia for Ocean Marine in San Francisco, "doing my bit to help the trade deficit." He noted that Brett McDonald had enrolled in flight school in Florida after a winter of skiing in Switzerland and added that BillMarx travelled around the world with RichGarfield and Rich Yellen. "The latest news is, they lost Mr. Yellen," Michael said, so Rich, if you're found, send up a flare. Michael's last note, and this month's, is that "Victor Limongelli is a hot shot banker in Philadelphia."
