In doing a bit of reminiscing in our November column we wondered about the absence of George Hanna on the basketball court in the winter of '39. George put an end to speculation with the following: "Sometime in the fall of '38 I developed a plantar wart on the bottom of my right foot which made it impossible to move about the court without a sharp pain. The problem was removed at Mary Hitchcock. The team had a West Coast trip scheduled over Christmas vacation so I came back to play with stitches in the bottom of my foot. Coach Cowles, noting how I was favoring the foot in practice, suggested that I had better have a doctor check the foot out before we left. And then he said, 'Maybe you don't want to have it looked at,' properly surmising that I was fearful of being advised that I couldn't make the trip. So the foot was not checked and I was included on the traveling squad. We played Toledo, and then stopped off in Cleveland to play Western Reserve. Trainer Rollie Bevan, who never thought anyone was too hurt to play, was asked by Cowles to take a look at my foot. 'Boy, that doesn't look very good but we'll have you ready to play tonight,' he said. And I did play, but not for long, and it was my last appearance in Dartmouth basketball. Later Cowles took me aside and said, 'Now don't tell Bevan, but we're going to have you see a doctor.' We did, and I was given a pair of crutches and continued to use them until long after classes resumed. But I had made the trip and it was a great one. We beat Stanford in overtime 49-48."

Back to t he present, George is recuperating in Venice, Fla., from surgery to repair a ruptured quadriceps tendon suffered in a fall at home in Keene in September. The Hannas see Roy and Flicky Middleworth, who are in the same condo complex.

Bob Nuffort says that he had lunch with Al and Dot Meyer in Minneapolis in September, and that they both looked great.

Al Tishman was the recipient of the Israel 40th Anniversary Medal at a luncheon in his honor on November 3 at the Pierre Hotel in New York. He was singled out for this special honor by his peers "not only for his outstanding contributions to his industry, but also for his whole-hearted participation in the program to build and strengthen Israel's economy through Israel Bonds."

Bill and Bunny Webster are back from an October trip to Florida via the Inland Waterway on a craft they took down for some friends. Web reports the sad news that Ernie Fetske's wife, Bettina, died in early November.

Lydia Anderson, wife of the late Jim Anderson, writes a cheerful note that she is just back from a barge trip in France where she sampled the wines and cheeses so appreciatively that she had to head for Canyon Ranch in Arizona to hike in the mountains, eat health food, and exercise aerobically to get back even.
