Forty-five years ago one of the best known of our teachers/coaches/administrators on campus was Hafey Arthur. For those of you who were on campus during the war you may recall him as an assistant to President Hopkins, assistant athletic director, coach of one of the most successful hockey teams in NCAA history, and a professor of history. I recently had a chance meeting with Hafey who was in the process of moving to Florida, He has changed very little, continues to love Dartmouth, and asked to be remembered to all '45s who were on his teams or in his class.
Tom Moran was in Kennebunkport, Maine, in September and from a friend I learned that Tom and Arnold Palmer live in the same compound in Latrobe, Pa., and that Tom continues his surgery practice.
Art Carey was in Hanover for the Cornell game and reports that the present freshman team despite its record is very impressive. He has retired as athletic director at Ipswich (Mass.) High School and now has time to visit Hanover for both varsity and freshman football games.
George Barr was very kind in having return cards from the last newsletter sent to me in Westford for which I am most grateful. (If you have not mailed yours please send news and change the zip code from 01866 to 01886 on the return card.)
Stan Luce reports retirement (?) from teaching but is on the lecture circuit for Miami University on a range of subjects: "words, French, and American humor." Also he completed a new French grammar and reader for the middle years and will soon be winding up his fifth book on the French writer Celine. For those of you living in eastern Massachusetts Stanford's son just established Stanford Woodworking in Amesbury.
Dick Kendall reports that his last child (of eight), Mary '78, was married in September to Scott Brown, also '78 and coauthor of the bestseller "Getting Together." Current grandchild count for the Kendalls is 14. Can anyone in the class match that?
An apology for missing the mini-reunion came from Frank Hutchins as well as praise for the new format of the Alumni Magazine with a request that there be more room for "letters to the editor," which give the alumni a chance to vent.
Tim Lewis attended Jean's Bradford College reunion last month and talked briefly with Ruth. He is still working and hopefully on his next visit we can work out the golf match we missed because I had already left the meeting.
Kurt Konigsbacher announces the arrival of his third grandchild, as well as his semi-retirement. He has his own technical consulting business (K-Bach Consultants) in Stamford, Conn.
It is always good to hear from our V-12 classmates and we hope that more of you will provide news of yourselves and make an appearance at reunions. Fred Kahn, a V-12 marine, wrote about some of the group who came from NYU to Dartmouth, including Harry Leggat (no relation and now deceased), who was one of the big guns on the Dartmouth basketball team which lost to Utah in 1944. Fred has a typical retiree's lament lots of golf but getting worse while his wife plays a good game.
If you still have a green card fill it out and send it to me. If not, write! And if you don't write to me, write to someone in power to insist that we limit the next U.S. Presidential nomination and election process to six months. We hope that 1989 has started well for you and that the year continues to be happy and healthy.
