NEW YORK, N.Y.-Sports columnist George Vecsey of The New York Times, in a recent roundup of potential old-timer nominees for the Baseball Hall of Fame, discussed the candidacy of Red Rolfe '31. He did so at the behest of John Weisert '31, a classmate of the late Yankee third baseman. John wrote Vecsey from his home in France: "Red was as skilled in fielding an arcane question on 'Hamlet' as he was in fielding a sizzling grounder." This, according to Weisert, was due to Red's participation in the Shakespeare course of Prof. Anton Raven dej. voted exclusively to that play.
Vecsey speculated on this inventing an interesting, if not error-free, double-play combination. Said Vecsey: "One suspects that familiarity with Polonius, Ophelia, and Banquo's Ghost will not qualify Red Rolfe . for inclusion
Says DAM: One also suspects that right now Red Rolfe's ghost is wondering if Hamlet's father's ghost has been traded for a player from "that Scottish team."
