As usual, first, the bad news: The death of HerbTalbot, M.D., on May 16 in Lynnfield, Mass., at the home of his son, Geoffrey '64, where he has been living since the death of his wife, Emily. Also, the death of John T. Whitman on July 15 in a convalescent home in West Hartford, Conn. Belatedly, the deaths of Elery, wife of Norman Martin, and Cornelia, widow of Whitney Campbell, reported by their son Tom '65.
Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) is still at it, commuting from his home in La Jolla to Hollywood, where he is working on his TV special. Jim Martin in Arizona is busy promoting the use of electricity over gas for transportation to eliminate smog and air pollution.
We wish all of you could attend a session of Alumni Council or Class Officers Weekend in Hanover as we have had the privilege of doing over the past several years. Talking to students and listening to panel discussions by faculty, administration, Trustees, and students gives one a very different picture than the one thrown at the public by the media. There have been many changes, some mistakes, and occasional deficiencies, some of which have been distorted by the press, but being there and seeing the loyalty and enthusiasm of the students convinces us that the Dartmouth we all love is still there and merits our support.
Thought for the month: growing old is not upsetting; being perceived as old is.
