The lot of class secretary is such that one rarely has an opportunity to cover stories first-hand. More often than not, I am forced to content myself with the all-too-infrequent submissions by the 1000-plus classmates who serve as my eyes and ears. A notable exception was the recent wedding of John Sedgewick to Helen Dea, which I was lucky enough to attend this past August. Personal attendance allows me to make detailed observations that rarely accompany your reports: for example, Sedge's primal dance exposition left his tuxedo shirt drenched with perspiration, and Helen led a 40-person bunny hop chain through the rooms of the normally reserved Toronto Golf Club. John is working for Citibank in Toronto, trading bonds, and playing lots of hockey and golf (though not enough of the latter to beat me in our match the morning of his wedding).
On the job front, two classmates have pursued careers outside the lawyer/ doctor/banker route that more than a few of us have followed. Susan Saideman seemed to be heading down the well-worn path when, after graduating from Harvard Business School, she took a job with the high-powered management consultant Bain & Co. in Boston. Susan chucked it all to take the job of general manager of Waterman Place in Quechee, Vt., where she runs both the Antiques Collaborative, a group of 60 antique dealers who share space in the building, and Rosalita's restaurant. Mean- while, Philip McMahon has joined the Peace Corps and has left for the remote Micronesian island of Pohnpei (feel free to drop in if you are in the area). A recent newspaper piece remarked on the remarkable coincidence between Phil's life and that of former Massachusetts Senator Paul Tsongas: both are graduates of Lowell High School and Dartmouth College, both have served in the Peace Corps and both have won battles over forms of lymphatic cancer. Stay tuned to see if Phil follows Tsongas' path to Washington.
