Nostalgia trip? Reminiscences of the 1940's? In keeping with the theme of this issue of DAM, and to begin serious thinking about our upcoming 45th, let these images from the "good old days" in Hanover help you recall why Dartmouth will ever remain special: Wormwood on the prowl Saturday nights; a visit to Pudge's office; Ed Booth's acting in his Shakespeare class; V-12s sneaking out of Fergie Murch's compulsory Physics; "Shakey" Shaw returning economics exams; Bruce Knight and Earl Sikes watching baseball practice; Louie Benezet's thought-provoking themes in Education I; and L.B. Richardson's terrorizing course in freshman Chemistry. These were only a small sample of the experiences that helped create the distinctive atmosphere we enjoyed so much.
For those involved in athletics and recreational pursuits, what memories do these names recall: Tuss, Jeff, Harry, Ozzie, Jerry, Tommy, Karl, Red, Walter, Ross, and John Rand? Or perhaps a stroll down Main Street will trigger yet other memories: Fletcher's, Tanzi's, Allen's, Putnam's, Mac's, Indian Bowl, Streamliner Diner, Inn Coffee Shop, Hap & Hal's, Tony's, Louis LaCourse's, Walt & Ernie's, Serry's, and, of course, Campion's and the Co-op. All of these establishments, save for the last four, are now ancient history, as are most of the individuals mentioned.
Nevertheless they are a large part of the Dartmouth experience we know and loved, and the 45th in June will give us a great opportunity to recall them and the many other people, places and events that continually bring us back in spirit and person.
Buol Hinman has passed along the news that Charlie Duncan, an Eastman Kodak director since 1977, was selected to chair a Public Policy Committee of the Board whose purpose is to ensure that the company's environmental and human resources and public affairs programs are consistent with Kodak policies, applicable laws, and the interests of shareowners. Congratulations Charlie!
A welcome note from Sandy and BarbaraTreat came in early December. There are now three Sandy Treats living in the Vail, Colo., area: Jr., III, and IV Our Jr. is dabbling in real estate with son Sandy III. In addition, ours is preparing for the Masters Racing National Competition to take place in Beaver Creek, Colo., this month.
Congratulations are also due to Albert W."Monk" Martin who has been named general chairman of the 38th Annual Shriner's Maple Sugar Bowl football game. Monk will head a team of 300 volunteers from Vermont and New Hampshire in preparing for the game, held annually on Dartmouth's Memorial Field. Thus far this game has raised over $3 million for Shriner's Hospitals for Crippled and Burned Children. Monk, now retired, lives in Plymouth, Vt., and is a frequent spectator at Big Green sporting events. He also is a Dartmouth track official and rarely missed a '46 mini-reunion.
It looks like we'll have over 200 classmates, wives, etc., at the 45th. Try to be in the group!
