What is it, do you suppose, about the timing of this November column? It seems that each year this one monthly space is the hardest to fill. Perhaps it has something to do with your being so busy all summer that little news trickles my way. Last year I had to resort to limericks. This year I shall report on an event which, at this writing, has not yet occurred, but will have when you read this.
Our annual great turnout for the Dartmouth Night weekend featured the always welcome nigh quality of hospitality provided to us by Pete and Lu Martin on Friday evening before the football rally, by Mike and Nita Choukas just before the Yale game, and by Dave and Babs Hall after the game and on into the evening. No wonder so many of us show up for these fall weekends every year!
The highlight of this year's gathering occurred at the Halls' maxi-munchies-and-cocktails fete, where Bob Hustek was presented with the 1990 "Spirit of'sl" award. Since 1986 Lefty has been tireless in his thoughtful efforts as Chairman of our class projects committee. With the help of his wife Cathy, he has managed entirely the distribution of funds from our class treasury to a number of Hanover and College beneficiaries, and he has done so in a manner which has brought much credit to our class. (See Batch's Newsletter for the complete citation of this award.)
Thoughtful Russ Dilks, former long-time class secretary, passes on news of DonPalmer, who has been selected as the new chairman of Morris 2000, a New Jersey county non-profit long-range planning organization of business, government, and community leaders. Besides being on the Morris and Sussex Boy Scout Council, Don is a sweet guy who operates his maple sugar house on his property at Schooleys Mountain, N.J.
It's class dues time, so in view of the good use (see above, re: Hustek) our class makes of your money, how about kicking in something extra this year maybe double?
And start making serious plans for our 40th Reunion in 1991, Monday, June 10 through the morning of Thursday, June 13. Batch will have all the details you will need (or could possibly want) to ease your transition from grumpy old man to carefree former undergraduate. If you've been to other reunions, you know how rejuvenating they are; if you ve never been back, then you are in for a real treat. Remember, we're getting the VIP treatment (don't ask why): the new Zimmerman dorm rooms with showers, etc. It'll be a North Country bargain-at-the-price vacation! So-o-o, let's have "'51 out!"
Take care, be good to yourselves, and keep in touch.
