A corporation headed by Jerome Brody has acquired the famous Gallaghers Steak House at 228 West 52nd Street. He bought the popular dining place for Broadway stars and sports figures for $350,000 from the estate of Jack Solomon who started the restaurant.
Jerry has had an interesting and successful career in the restaurant business. At the age of 25 he became president of Restaurant Associates, which at the time ran only the Riker coffee shops and a couple of cafeterias. During his service as president it acquired luxury eating places and raised its annual gross receipts from $4 million to $24 million a year. As head of Restaurant Associates, Jerry supervised "specialty dining" in a group of restaurants in the metropolitan area. In Manhattan they include The Forum of the Twelve Caesars, Four Seasons, Leone's, Tavern on the Green, La Fonda del Sol, and Brasserie.
He resigned this position early in November in what he described as "a family thing." He is, however, still the largest stockholder in Restaurant Associates. The new Brody Corporation, in addition to the operation of Gallaghers, will engage in "specialty dining management consultation" and in the design and operation of other restaurants and food service facilities in hotels. How come the Reunion Committee didn't put him in charge of "food"!
