When Trustee Emeritus Jack Dodd was informed that President Emeritus and 1922 adopted classmate John Kemeny was hospitalized in Hanover, Jack sent a letter of good wishes. In postsurgery convalescence during early October, John replied with a letter containing the following excerpt: "I have cancelled all my October engagements but one: On the 13th I am scheduled to give the Class of 1930 Fellowship lecture to a large group of alumni. I am determined to keep that date even if I have to give the lecture sitting down. Jean (Mrs. Kemeny) and I send you, Fran (Mrs. Dodd) and all of '22 our best."

So it was that John Kemeny in an upholstered chair on the stage at Spaulding Auditorium delivered his speech entitled "Dartmouth Remembrances." Introduced by President James Freedman, John spoke for an hour to a packed audience. He explained how he at age 27 came with Jean to Dartmouth in 1953. He highly praised his predecessor, John Sloan Dickey, and mentioned the major developments during his presidency (1970—81). The audience responded in a long, standing ovation.

In the pre-lecture announcement John was described as "teacher, innovator, author, researcher, mathematician, co-founder of BASIC, Dartmouth College President, civic leader." He has always been proud of his 1922 affiliation and the class offers its very best wishes to him and Jean.
