All Twoters—classmates, the '22 ladies, and friends sincerely ac- knowledge the three-year grant of $4.5 million Dartmouth is receiving from the Omaha-based Peter Kiewit Foundation. Dartmouth will use 20 percent of the proceeds to support a partnership with the University of Nebraska for work on information networks, computer science programs, language studies, and the teaching of writing. The rest will be used for support of mathematics, computer science, and information resources at Dartmouth.
The Kiewit Foundation normally limits its grants to Nebraska. In this instance, however, the partnership between the private and the public educational institution allows the foundation to support Mr. Kiew- it's interests both in Dartmouth and in educational opportunities in Nebraska.
Peter Kiewit was one of 12 boys from Omaha in the class of 1922. In his career he developed one of the largest, highly respected, internationally known, successful construction companies. In the 1960s he made a personal gift of Kiewit Computer Center in Hanover. After his 1979 death, his estate formed the foundation that currently has assets in excess of $200 million.
In its gratitute to the Kiewit Foundation the class also thanks Mrs. Kiewit, who is a loyal member of the 1922 ladies. Peter's affiliation with Dartmouth reflected his friendship with President Emeritus JohnKemeny '22A, and Vice President Emeritus Orton Hicks 21. He was also a close friend of our departed Herluf Olsen, former Dean of Tuck School, and General Ike Miller.
