Hanny Mason married Martha Krachik on December 30 at the Church of the Land in Des Moines, where the Pope celebrated mass on his visit to the U.S. Evidently, Hanny's motivation in buying the vintage TANZI license plate at great expense in the auction at our last reunion was to have something really special to give his new wife. Martha has met a number of '57s at mini-reunions last year in Des Moines and New York and looks forward to more Dartmouth-related activities. Hanny and Martha visited recently with Bob and Page Lee. Bob has retired as chairman of First Interstate Bank in Denver and is now running a large foundation.

Jules Rose is chairman of Sloan's Supermarkets, now the largest food retailer in Manhattan. After leaving Dartmouth, Jules enjoyed the management training program at Lerner Shops so much that he joined the army. That led to meeting his future wife, whose last name, coincidentally, was Sloan. Jules worked his way through each department at Sloan's, which included chopping meat for a year, managing stores, ana buying cookies and frozen foods. Those connections just resulted in his becoming the first retailer ever elected chairman of the National Frozen Foods Association. Jules also lectures in management and marketing at Cornell, Fordham, Pratt, and other schools.

Marilyn and Jules recently returned from a trip to the Soviet Union . "If present trends continue, there will undoubtedly be opportunities for American business. I would be interested in doing something to help correct what are obviously unbelievable distribution problems in Russia. We waited in line ana went around a store with some [Russian] people who were very open about why there was no meat and why the produce was so limited. (It should happen to me to have a hundred people waiting outside our stores, even if I didn't have anything to sell them once they got inside.)

"I took pictures in Rostov, where the Black Sea and the Volga join. The quantity of beautiful produce there was fantastic, but it doesn't get to the rest of Russia. According to a Russian professor, 30 percent or more of all their fresh produce rots for lack of distribution capability. I would estimate that not more than three percent is lost in the U.S. between farm and store. Most waste here is at home, after purchase."

Jules and Marilyn do a good deal of traveling. "In Monte Carlo one day, a classmate whose name I couldn't remember entered the elevator I was riding in and said, 'You're Julie Rose.' " Somewhat embarrassed, Jules never did determine who it was and would like the mystery elevator rider to please identify himself.

Art and Elaine Johnson are now living in Altadena, Calif., a suburb of Pasadena. Having taken up new responsibilities within First Interstate Bank, Art is now portfolio manager in Los Angeles. Both the Johnsons are patronizing a local chiropractor: Elaine because of tennis injuries and Art because his hip joints are wearing out. He's been plotting with Jim Dalton to drive the nurses whacko in some hospital by sharing a double room and getting hip replacements at the same time.
