BERLIN, DECEMBER 22,1989. They happened to be there that Friday when the wall in front of the Brandenburg Gate was opened. They happened to have Dartmouth sweatshirts with themand a camera. They are Jean Robertson Getraer '89 and Andrew Getraer '86, married four months earlier and visiting from Edinburgh where they are pursuing master's degrees—she in education, he in history.

Jean writes: "We are standing on the West Berlin side, but not for long! We were swept up in the freedom celebration and went, in the pouring rain, through the wall opening under the Brandenburg Gate and into East Berlin. No need for visas or making an unbalanced and involuntary money exchange at the border. It wasn't an easy feat as most people were heading the opposite direction. There was a carnival-like atmosphere—music, food, banners, even a few fireworks. We joined a small group on top of the Berlin Wall! It was unforgettable. There's no telling what the future holds for Berlin and the German people, but for that day it was a very happy and exciting place to be."
