For the last several years Jay Greene has been contributing management and computer skills to the Institute of Human Origins in Berkeley, Calif., founded by Don Johansen who discovered the famous Lucy skeleton at Olduvai Gorge. Jay recently took a three-week trip to Israel with a colleague from the institute, to explore the possibility of doing some digs in caves where Neanderthals were known to have lived. Sidelights of he trip ranged from examination of a portion of the Wailing Wall which Jay's host established as dating from the time of David, about 3,000 years ago, to a visit to a kibbutz which had just been rocketed by the Arabs.

For the time being, Jay is sticking closer to home in St. Helena. He is taking an active role in one group that is publishing a history of Napa Valley and in another that is seeking to block the creation of an excursion train they fear would bring additional hordes of tourists to an already very crowded area. The 48 grape vines at Jay and Paulina's chateau are looking magnificent and should yield 20 to 25 gallons of wine this year. As a point of reference, a full 15-gallon barrel weighs over a hundred pounds.

Clark Griffiths is director of engineering for Split Ballbearing, his employer since graduation from Thayer School. The company was the object of a 100 percent leveraged buyout several years ago led by Harold Geneen, retired chairman of ITT. Debt was increased from $145 to $185 million over two and a half years. The company nearly went bankrupt as a result and several months ago was bailed out through a purchase by Timken. Clark's firm makes bearings for the space shuttles, 747s, Pratt & Whitney and GE jet engines, and other high tech applications.
