Writing a column in September that will not be published until November is not my idea of keeping you up to date. However, I will, with the help of our classmates in Hanover, be able to tell you in the November issue who enjoyed the October mini-reunion.
From the August 29 issue of Gannett Suburban newspapers I have an article concerning the recent Emmy Awards. The article lambasts the whole production but has these nice words: "One of the nicest surprises of all was an award to Hal Gurnee, super-stellar director of Late Night With David Letterman. Gurnee is one of the best directors, and nicest guys, in TV" The article goes on to say that Hal acknowledged the great Jack Paar who gave him his start in the business. Nice going, Hal! This article came from David Mandelbaum '54. Thank you, Dave.
I received a notice that Doree Lysle Nash and Spencer Milton Smith were married August 14 in Saxton's River, Vt. They will be home on Cape Cod after December 1. Egad! Where are you going for a honeymoon? To the Moon? Best wishes Doree, and congrats Spence, from all of us.
Our class is now embarked on a search to replace Welles Fendrich as our head agent. This is the most difficult job of all the class offices, particularly as we approach our 50th. Welles did a super job, but there comes a time when you just can't do it anymore. Welles, we all thank you, and, of course, if you want to reconsider, we'd love to have you continue. I hope to report on the new man in our next issue.
Mort Thalhimer wrote to me in late August. Said he had a fantastic time at the 45th. In July he and Hank Stern and their spouses journeyed to Aspen, Colo. They enjoyed golfing, white water rafting, blue sky, and zero humidity. And I thought Aspen was only a ski resort. Later in the summer Mort stopped off on a trip to Maine and spent some time with Jim O'Neil. Jim was taken seriously ill last March, and, according to Mort, he seems to be responding to treatment and has a very positive attitude. Jim would appreciate hearing from old friends and classmates. He's with his son Jim Jr. at 13 Constitution Drive, Hanscome Air Force Base, Bedford, MA 01721.
